LAUSD TITLE NOW IN GRANADA HILLS.

After years of watching Academic Decathlon teams from Woodland Hills capture first place among Los Angeles Unified schools, Granada Hills Charter was named district champ late Tuesday after posting the highest score in the nation.

This is the initial time Granada Hills placed first, toppling reigning national champ Taft High School, which finished in a distant seventh place.

The nine-member team from Granada Hills scored 49,775 of a possible 60,000 points and will represent the district in the state finals next month.

``This is a credit to all of the last teams I've coached, because without their success this team wouldn't have bought into the program,'' said Nicholas Weber, who has coached the Granada Hills team for four years.

Winners were announced during the district's awards banquet at the Los Angeles Convention Center The Los Angeles Convention Center (abbreviated LACC) is a convention center in downtown Los Angeles. County decathlon winners will be announced Thursday in Montebello, while winning teams from private schools will be named Sunday.

Granada Hills and seven wild-card teams from the Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population.  will compete next month at the state Academic Decathlon in Los Angeles. The winner of that contest will go to the national championship in April in Honolulu.

California has won 13 of 25 national championships, with nine of those won by LAUSD LAUSD Los Angeles Unified School District (Los Angeles, CA)  teams. Last year, Taft High School of Woodland Hills won its third national championship. Taft also won in 1988 and 1993.

This year's top individual scorer was North Hollywood High's Jasmine Florentine, 18, who garnered 8,929 of a possible 10,000 points.

``Last year I only won one medal because I didn't study hard enough,'' Florentine said. ``This time I studied the guide over and over.''

Four-time national champion El Camino Real High School El Camino Real High School (also known locally as "ECR" and by some more recently as "ELCO") is a public secondary school located in the Woodland Hills district of the San Fernando Valley region of the city of Los Angeles, California. , also of Woodland Hills, came in second in the district, with 48,880.6 of a possible 60,000 points. Last year, El Camino also placed second to Taft. El Camino took the top national prize in 2005.

North Hollywood High School North Hollywood High School, originally called Lankershim High School when it opened in 1927, is a secondary school in North Hollywood in Los Angeles, California. The Academic Decathlon consists of multiple-choice tests in art, economics, language and literature, mathematics, music and science, as well as the Super Quiz oral relay and written contests, interviews, speech and essay competitions.

Although teams can compete with as few as six students, each typically has nine: three with grade-point averages of 3.75 to 4.00; three with GPAs of 3.00 to 3.74; and three with GPAs below 3.00.
