LAUSD OFFICIALS TO PUSH CHANGES IN SACRAMENTO.

Byline: HARRISON SHEPPARD Sacramento Bureau

SACRAMENTO -- Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population.  officials plan to visit Sacramento next week to establish a better relationship with new lawmakers and push for changes in state law to help the district's building program.

It will be the first trip to the state Capitol for Superintendent David Brewer This article is about the businessman and Lord Mayor of London; for the American jurist, see David Josiah Brewer

``I really don't ever want our story not to be known in Sacramento again,'' said school board President Marlene Canter, who will also travel to Sacramento. ``I know the superintendent feels that way, and the board feels that way. We want to have a continuous presence in Sacramento -- and in D.C., which we haven't had before.''

Brewer and Canter, along with district facilities chief Guy Mehula, will be in Sacramento on Monday and Tuesday.

Mehula said the district plans to ask state officials to alter the formula now used to calculate allocation of bond funds to school building projects.

The formula weighs disproportionately against districts expected to face declining enrollment, he said.

He said officials also would like changes in state rules to allow them to receive funding for projects that add multiple stories to schools, rather than having to acquire new land.

Brewer and Canter said they didn't have any specific meetings scheduled to address that bill but will express their opposition if the subject comes up.

Brewer said he and Canter both expect to visit Sacramento often this year.

``We will get up there more often,'' Brewer said. ``One of my philosophies is continuous engagement and collaboration.''
