An anti-obesity measure that took effect last summer restricts the amount of fat, sugar and salt in items sold to students in campus stores, vending machines vending machine, coin-operated, automatic device for selling goods. ``The timing was wrong,'' Wells said. Officials paid $6,055 for the mix and expect the district to take a hit on today's sale.

But health advocates are hopeful that getting rid of the brownies will keep kids from packing on the pounds.

``Every little bit helps,'' said Chad Fenwick, LAUSD's adviser on physical education. ``It creates a learning environment. It sends the message that these aren't good for you.''

``We should start auctioning off our greasy pizza next,'' Canter said.

A bake sale is a fundraising activity where baked goods such as doughnuts, cupcakes and cookies, sometimes along with ethnic foods, are sold.

``I hope somebody buys these brownies, but if they don't, I move to give it to the (Bob) Hertzberg campaign so they'll be a little sweeter to the district,'' he said, referring to the mayoral candidate's push to break up the district.
