LAUSD ASKED TO JUGGLE SCHOOL CALENDARS.

The Los Angeles school The Los Angeles School of Urbanism is an academic movement emerged during the mid-1980s, loosely based at the University of Southern California and UCLA, that poses a challenge to the dominant Chicago School of Urbanism.  district may cut the number of academic calendars it uses from six to three, possibly forcing students at 63 schools to switch to other schedules.

Interim Superintendent Ramon Cortines has proposed reducing the number of calendars, which set vacation dates for students and teachers, to make it easier to train staff members and provide remedial REMEDIAL. ``We can have professional development for our staff. We can have intervention programs,'' Cortines said Tuesday.

The school board is scheduled to discuss the proposal at its next meeting.

Board member David Tokofsky, however, questioned whether it made sense to force schools to adopt one calendar when they had previously chosen another. ``We're big enough for a little variety,'' Tokofsky said.

Most of the schools affected are elementary campuses currently using a calendar called ``Modified Concept 6,'' a variation of a year-round, multitrack mul·ti·track

The regular Concept 6 calendar has two periods of instruction of about 80 days each, interrupted by two breaks. Modified Concept 6 includes the same number of instructional days split into four periods with four breaks.

The 47 schools now on Modified Concept 6 would switch to the regular Concept 6.
