LATIN LEGACY.The colonial section of Arequipa Arequipa (ärākē`pä), city (1993 pop. 713,206), alt. c.7,550 ft (2,300 m), capital of Arequipa dept., S Peru, on the Chili River. One of Peru's largest cities, it is the commercial center of S Peru and N Bolivia. Alpaca wool, the city's chief product, is graded, sorted, and shipped out through the port of Mollendo., Peru, has become the most recent addition to UNESCO UNESCO - United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (since 1945; Paris, France)'s World Heritage list. The Andean city joined nine other South American sites to win the designation in 2000, along with Cuba's 19th century coffee plantations in the province of Santiago and Nicaragua's ruins in Leon Viejo.
