LATIN GRAMMYS GOLDEN MOMENTS AWARD SHOW HERALDS RISING STARS.

Byline: Fred Shuster Music Writer

Spanish-born heartthrob Alejandro Sanz's tearful tenor voice brought home three Latin Grammy Awards The Latin Grammy Awards were launched in 2000 with a telecast aired on CBS. It was the first primarily Spanish language prime-time program carried on an American network television. , including record of the year, making him the big winner at Wednesday's elegant, well-produced music awards telecast at the Kodak Theatre The Kodak Theatre is a live theatre in the Hollywood and Highland retail, dining, and entertainment complex on Hollywood Boulevard and North Highland Avenue in the Hollywood district of Los Angeles. .

Sanz won trophies for recording of the year, album of the year and song of the year - a songwriting award. Last year, Sanz was also the top winner with four wins.

``It's embarrassing to me to win so many awards two years in a row,'' the Madrid-based singer said backstage.

The event underlined Latin music's increasing marketing muscle, wide appeal and wealth of diversity. There was also plenty of skin on display.

It was a bilingual ceremony for the most part, as presenters and winners went back and forth between English and Spanish.

Jorge Moreno, voted best new artist, told reporters he considered himself ``Cuban from the streets of Miami The Streets of Miami refers to several temporary street course race circuits set up in the Miami-area. Three distinct courses have been utilized over the years:
  • Temporary street course in Tamiami Park (CART, 1985-1988)
. I relate to the kids who speak both languages.''

The handsome young crooner, the first Latino artist signed to Madonna's Maverick record label, added he was ``flying'' from receiving the trophy but said he was a big fan of Gian Marco Gian Marco Javier Zignago Alcóver was born in Lima (Peru) on August 17, 1970 and is one of the most important, recognized and prestigious Peruvian singer-songwriters. Winner of the Grammy Latino 2005  and his fellow nominees in the new artist category.

Gloria Estefan, who co-hosted the awards with actor Jimmy Smits, kicked off the lively two-hour broadcast with a double dedication to those lost on Sept. 11 and ``the great city of New York New York, state, United States

He became famous in the late 1960s and early 1970s with his band, the Santana Blues Band, going mostly under the title "Santana", which
performed a rap-metal number titled ``America'' from his forthcoming album.

Latin music legends were also honored. Ageless Afro-Cuban music queen Celia Cruz Celia Cruz (October 21 1925 – July 15 2003) was an Afro-Cuban-American salsa singer who spent most of her career living in New Jersey, and working in the United States and several Latin American countries.  got the nod for best salsa album, the latest of the several dozen records she has recorded and awards she has received. But the accent Wednesday was firmly on youth, personified by Colombian singer-songwriter Juanes, who took the best rock song trophy. The single-named performer gave his on-camera speech and backstage interviews entirely in Spanish.

Meanwhile, one presenter, ``Six Feet Under'' actor Freddy Rodriguez This article is about the actor. For the cyclist, see Fred Rodriguez.

series garnered. Backstage, Rodriguez said he felt ``extremely blessed,'' adding, ``I could probably count on one hand the number of Latinos who've been nominated.''

The Latin recording academy handed out 41 trophies - 33 during the pre- telecast portion and eight on-camera awards, which were interspersed with musical segments, including performances by Shakira and Marc Anthony. By comparison, the general Grammy Awards honors 100 categories in a sprawling ceremony.

Before the ceremony, much of the attention centered on Cuba. Its 22 nominees, including jazz pianist Chuco Valdes, guitarist Rey Guerra and rapper X Alfonso, couldn't get entry visas. Valdes didn't get the chance to accept his award in person for best pop instrumental album for ``Canciones Ineditas'' - his first Grammy after decades in the business.

Wednesday was only the third time the Latin Grammys were awarded. The ceremony debuted in 2000, but last year's telecast, initially set for Sept. 11, was canceled because of the terrorist attacks. Even before the tragedy, the ceremony faced problems when the show had to be moved from Miami to Los Angeles following fears that protests by Cuban-American anti-Castro groups could endanger security.

The second-annual awards were handed out weeks later at a press conference broadcast on the Internet. Sanz was the big winner last year with four trophies.

The general Grammys, which take place the last week of February, also honor Latin music, but only the best-known genres, including Latin jazz, salsa and merengue merengue
