Twenty minutes from another defeat, one with the potential to deal a crippling blow to their playoff hopes, the Kings found something Saturday night, something that had been missing of late.

What, exactly? It's hard to say. It's intangible, an extra level of hockey that is brought on by desperation. The fans saw it, and the St. Louis Blues saw it, and the Kings wish they could bottle it.

``I wish I knew, so we could do that every time,'' Kings coach Andy Murray said after his team scored three third-period goals to beat the Blues 3-1 in front of 18,118 at Staples Center This articlearticle or section has multiple issues:

The Kings came in with losses in four of their previous five games, and just a one-point lead over the Mighty Ducks

for the eighth and final playoff position in the Western Conference. With the victory, the Kings moved one point ahead of idle Vancouver and into seventh place with 79 points.

Any loss is painful at this point, but a loss to the Blues, who have the third-fewest wins in the NHL NHL Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, see there , would have been devastating dev·as·tate

``Between the second and third periods, Millsie came in a said that we can't wait until the playoffs to start playing playoff hockey,'' Cammalleri said. ``I think that resonated with us, because he's right. We won't be in the playoffs at all if we don't start playing like we belong there.''

Through two periods, the Kings trailed 1-0, on Mike Glumac's second-period power-play goal, were being outshot by the Blues 21-18 and had failed on all seven of their power-play opportunities.

Avery, playing with a pink stick as part of a fundraiser for breast-cancer research, got the Kings going with a goal exactly one minute into the third period, and the Kings were unstoppable after that.

Cammalleri's shot deflected in off the skate of a St. Louis defender for the eventual winning power-play goal 4:50 into the period, and Belanger scored with 3:03 remaining to cap a period in which the Kings outshot the Blues 18-3 and also killed three St. Louis power plays.

, who had allowed at least four goals in four of his past five starts, didn't face significant pressure but didn't make any mistakes as he saved 23 of 24 St. Louis shots.

``These game are do or die and we have to make a commitment,'' Avery said. ``We can have all the meetings we want and all that (stuff) about systems or whatever, but it's just about working hard.''

The Kings did just enough of that, and ensured that they will remain in playoff position this weekend.

A Kings loss, and a Mighty Ducks victory over Columbus today, would have dropped the Kings into ninth place in the conference, but the inspired comeback gave the Kings a sliver of breathing room.

It was also a rarity for the Kings, the first time since Jan. 19 that they won a game by more than one goal. Of course, the Kings won only seven games during that 19-game span, which is the entire problem.

``Obviously, these are desperate times and you need a sense of urgency,'' Murray said. ``We were able to find that tonight. ... We stayed on it and found a way to win the game.''

For a while, that seemed a dicey proposition at best. The Kings spent seven of the game's first 14 minutes on the power play, including a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:25, but couldn't get a goal.

The teams continued to trade power-play chances early in the second period, and the Blues failed on their own lengthy 5-on-3 advantage but finally netted a power-play goal with 8:24 left in the period.

brought the puck up the right side and fed a cross-ice pass to Glumac, who wound up and fired a one-timer slap shot that rose and beat Garon to give St. Louis a 1-0 lead.

That held up until Avery's goal, which got the Kings going.
