LATE GIFT IDEAS FOR THE OUTDOORS LOVERS.

Byline: Ray Sasser Dallas Morning News

Only six more shopping days until Christmas. Here are a few ideas for outdoors lovers on your list:

Nearly everyone can use a multi-purpose tool that fits in a belt sheath. Leatherman was the original. Buck makes the latest. Gerber has the most unique design; it features one-hand opening action.

Prices start at $20 for a Leatherman Micra Tool and top out at about $60 for a Super Leatherman, Buck or the Gerber with tool kit coupler Refers to a myriad of different types of sockets for plugging in electric or electronic cables or devices. See network coupler.  and extra tools.

When you've got one of these multi-purpose tools hanging on your belt, you've got fishing pliers pliers,

Mangrove bags work well for camera gear, extra sweaters, lunch or ammunition in a wet duck blind. In a pinch, the $140 bags can be used as soft-sided ice chests.

For hunters who like to read, you can't beat the gift of a good book. A new duck hunter's coffee-table book from Ducks Unlimited, ``Dabblers & Divers'' (Willow Creek Press; $39.95) proves once and for all that duck hunting is the most visual of the hunting sports. It includes 100 stunning color photos and a limited amount of text, mostly in the form of quotes from famous writers and other well-known duck hunters.

For whetstone-challenged outdoors lovers there's a ridiculously simple knife sharpening device called EZ SHARP ($7) that looks too good to be true. You simply pull the blade to be sharpened through a pair of tungsten carbide blades mounted in a plastic handle.

Of course you can't get lost if you're packing a handheld GPS (global positioning satellite) unit like the Lowrance Eagle AccuMap Sport.

Not much bigger than a cellular phone, the AccuMap Sport works on land and water to allow you to log 1,250 position markers, 250 waypoints or 20 routes with 10 waypoints per route. In other words Adv. 1. in other words - otherwise stated; "in other words, we are broke"

The primary unit costs $600, and it accepts any of the 64 SmartMap mini cartridges that cover the U.S. with digitized mapping with detail down to one-tenth of a mile. The cartridges cost $90 each.
