VALENCIA -- Tom Veloz was a shining star for Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, a generous contributor who left a legacy that includes a state-of-the-art breast imaging center.

So it was fitting Tuesday that his adult sons helped top the community Christmas tree Christmas tree

Evergreen tree, usually decorated with lights and ornaments, to celebrate the Christmas season. The use of evergreen trees, wreaths, and garlands as symbols of eternal life was common among the ancient Egyptians, Chinese, and Hebrews.

``This really means a lot to us,'' son David Veloz said.

``It's really an honor,'' his brother Peter Veloz added.

``I can't believe you chickened out,'' Peter shouted to his brother below.

``You're looking a little shaky,'' David said, claiming a fear of heights.

The tree will be lighted Sunday Sunday when the hospital holds its 21st annual community tree lighting ceremony from 2 to 5 p.m. There will be free children's holiday crafts, face painting, train rides and pictures with Santa Claus. Youngsters can pen their wishes to Santa and mail them.

The spruce sits in a spot in front of the hospital that is slated for construction. If the city of Santa Clarita eventually approves the hospital's expansion plan, the tree will either be replanted at another location on the grounds or replaced, hospital officials said.
