LAST HURRAH FOR A.V. STARS; AREA'S TOP SENIORS WILL PLAY TODAY IN ALL-STAR GAME.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Daily News Staff Writer

For Palmdale High's Jason Gorman and Mike Arellano, Highland's Traviss Hodge and Quartz Hill's Ryan West, today's 22nd annual Daily News Bernie Milligan All-Star Baseball All-Star Baseball is a baseball video game series developed and published by Acclaim Entertainment. The series began in 1998 with the release of All-Star Baseball '99.  Game (at 4 p.m., preceded by a home-run contest at 2) will be an exclamation point exclamation point: see punctuation.

The game, dividing 48 of the area's top players, gives participants a chance to match skills with the best in front of a packed crowd that always includes major-league scouts, college coaches, peers and fans from the San Fernando San Fernando, city, Argentina

The four Golden League standouts will represent the East team, coached by Harvard-Westlake's Josh Smaler and Poly's Chuck Schwal.

Golden League most valuable player Gorman, a shortstop/pitcher, and center fielder Arellano led Palmdale to the league championship and a semifinal berth in the Southern Section Division I playoffs, where the Falcons lost 3-2 to eventual champion Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. It is calculated as total bases divided by at bats:  in 27 games. He was 7-1 with a 2.47 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 51 innings.

Gorman probably will play for Cal State Northridge next season.

Palmdale coach Lance Pierson, who played and coached college baseball College baseball is baseball as played on the intercollegiate level at institutions of higher education, predominantly in the United States. Compared to American football and basketball in the United States, college competition plays a less significant contribution to cultivating  at Biola, says Gorman definitely will make an impact at the next level.

alone will make him successful,'' Pierson said. ``He's just a smart, hard-working, dedicated kid.''

Slow-starting Arellano, recovering from a broken wrist in 1997 that cost him most of his junior season, came on strong, finishing with a .400 average, nine home runs, 34 RBI, an .838 slugging percentage and a .473 on-base average. He made just one error and was roundly hailed as the area's premier defensive outfielder.

Arellano, just 5-foot-7 and 150 pounds, slammed several home runs over 400 feet, including a clutch two-run shot that was the difference in a 4-3 quarterfinal playoff win over favored Crespi.

``Mike was incredible,'' Pierson said. ``He's the most powerful little guy I've seen. Maybe the guy from Chaminade (Chris Martinez, who set a state record with 20 home runs) is better, but Mike is a powerful kid.''

Right fielder/pitcher Hodge, drafted last week in the 34th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates This article is about the baseball team. For the National Hockey League team, see Pittsburgh Pirates (NHL). For the National Football League team (1933–1940), see Pittsburgh Steelers. , led the area in hitting with a .570 average after averaging .600-plus for almost the entire season. His numbers were huge: five home runs, 12 doubles, 30 RBI and 34 runs. He also won five games as a pitcher, thanks to one of the area's fastest fastballs.

Unheralded West blossomed after a two-home-run junior campaign. He rocked the region with nine home runs in Quartz Hill's first 12 games, finishing with 10 homers, a .474 average, 10 doubles, and three triples. That's 23 extra-base hits in 25 games. USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  is among the major universities recruiting West.

Thickly-built left-hander West, who homered in five straight games, hit a 450-foot home run against Highland midway through the season that Quartz Hill coach Dave Stradling said was the longest in school in history.
