LASERTECHNICS ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP WITH MEDIA IMAGING TECHNOLOGIES
 OF DALLAS
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., May 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Lasertechnics, Inc. (NASDAQ: LASX), announced today at its annual meeting of stockholders a strategic partnership with Media Imaging Technologies Corporation ("MITC") of Dallas.
The partnership has been established to penetrate the newspaper, communications, and weather analysis markets with a state-of-the-art electronic picture editing system. The systems consist of SNAPSHOT -- an on-line general purpose computer from MITC specifically programmed to handle full resolution wireservice/newspaper photographs, satellite weather images, and high definition charts and graphs and the Lasertechnics DIR Gray Scale Printer -- a high resolution, continuous tone monochrome printer that produces photograph quality images.
Bob Kelly, president of MITC, stated that "throughout the world in the newspapers and wire services alone, there are thousands of out-dated analog printers which the industry will replace with new picture editing terminals and high speed digital printers like the Lasertechnics DIR. The strategic alliance of Lasertechnics and MITC will allow us to combine the technological resources necessary to more effectively compete on a global basis."
As an initial result of this partnership, MITC was awarded a two- phase performance contract from China National Instruments Import and Export Corporation, the official government agent for Xinhua News Agency. The initial two phases of the contract, totaling over $1 million, requires MITC to supply 30 SNAPSHOT systems plus local area network and 12 digital printers. The third phase of the business program, as represented in the official letter-of-intent, could approach $6 million, consisting of at least 300 locations with stated requirements of 50 digital printers. "MITC's current China project, coupled with recent sales to other international wire service organizations, demonstrates the movement by the industry toward new imaging technology," commented Kelly.
The electronic picture editing system was presented and demonstrated at the Lasertechnics annual meeting. Louis F. Bieck Jr., president of Lasertechnics, commented, "Electronic picture editing terminals are rapidly becoming a widely accepted and utilized tool not only in the newsroom, but also in weather bureaus, educational institutions, and the military."
Bieck continued, "This is a significant new market opportunity for our digital printer, but it can be realized only when it is part of a cost effective, versatile high performance system like SNAPSHOT. In addition, based on our European machine placements into similar market applications, we expect to double our revenue opportunity when we include the sales of our proprietary consumable media. We see our new relationship with Media Imaging Technologies Corporation as a key element for expanding our worldwide participation in this market."
