LASER MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY, INC. UNDERGOES RESTRUCTURING
SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Laser Medical Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: LMET) announced a restructuring today. Dr. Guy Levy, chairman of the board, was named chief executive officer and president effective immediately. Other executive responsibilities were streamlined with an emphasis on marketing and sales. Shirley McGarvey, vice president-strategic planning, was named to the board of directors.
The company recently completed development on its new line of dental lasers and has settled litigation, notably a patent dispute with American Dental Laser. Together with the corporate reorganization, these recent events have enabled the company to enjoy a reduction in overhead of approximately 30 percent commencing with the fiscal quarter ended Dec. 31, 1992, while increasing sales staffing.
Shirley McGarvey previously has been a consultant to the company on FDA matters. She was formerly vice president-regulatory affairs and research and development at Chiron Ophthalmics, and an executive of Baxter Pharmaceuticals and American Hospital Supply Corp.
Laser Medical Technology manufactures and markets dental laser products. The company has received U.S. and foreign patents which cover the use of a cooling medium (such as water) on human tissue during the application of a laser beam. The cooling medium not only prevents thermal damage, but causes a photo acoustic effect which aids removal of tissue. As a result of the use of a cooling medium, the company's lasers are uniquely capable of cutting mineralized hard dental tissue without killing the tooth. The Laser-35 received FDA authorization to market for soft tissue applications in May 1991. On March 30, 1992, the company announced that its Investigational Device Exemption application, for apicoectomy (cutting of the tooth root) was accepted by the FDA.
