LASER GUN TO TARGET CARS; DEPUTIES GET LEG UP ON SPEEDERS DLIM.

Byline: Romy Jacobson Daily News Staff Writer

Speeders beware: Lancaster sheriff's deputies have a new weapon to catch you.

A state-of-the-art laser gun better than conventional traffic radar versions at pinpointing individual vehicles has been put into service to combat speeding, which officials blamed for one-third of the 1,923 crashes last year in Lancaster.

``It's another piece of equipment that will help keep our city safe and keep our people out of the hospital,'' said Lancaster Vice Mayor Henry Hearns, who with Mayor Frank Roberts Frank Roberts may refer to:

The new device primarily will be used on crowded streets, while the conventional radar guns that local deputies have used for years will still be on duty on less busy desert roads. City officials said they hope to supply deputies with more laser guns in the future.

A conventional traffic radar is mounted on a patrol car and emits a beam of radio waves Radio waves

The new laser gun, aimed like a handgun, sends out a beam of invisible infrared light Noun 1. infrared light - electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths longer than visible light but shorter than radio waves

``It's real target specific,'' said Lt. Terry Lewis. ``It's easy to handle because it's hand-held.''

``We used to see cars speeding but the radar beams scattered so much we couldn't get a reading,'' said Deputy Mark Johnston
