LARGE SCHOOLS: NEWBURY PARK REMAINS ON TRACK FOR MARMONTE LEAGUE TITLE.

Newbury Park High used defense in a 21-6 victory Friday night over visiting Westlake High, holding onto a share of the Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. The Marmonte Leauge is part of the CIF Southern Section. Click here to view the league schedule.  lead while dooming the Warriors' playoff chances.

Newbury Park (7-2, 5-1), which clinched its first Southern Section playoff appearance in six years, shares the league lead with Moorpark.

Garrett Smith returned a Westlake fumble 10 yards for Newbury Park's final score with 5:56 remaining.

Westlake (3-6 overall, 2-4 Marmonte) scored only three points from three first-and-goal situations, as Chance Flaaten recovered a fumble to end one drive and Scott Takeguma intercepted a pass on Westlake's final play of the game.

--Saugus 22, Burroughs 14: Zach Summers rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another as the Centurions (4-5, 2-2) kept their playoff hopes alive with a victory at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. .

Michael Torres ran for 80 yards for Saugus (4-5, 2-2), which next week takes on Valencia in a battle for third place.

Thomas Kyle ran for 159 yards and two scores for Burroughs of Burbank (3-6, 0-4).

--Hart 28, Burbank 0: Robbie Casselberry, starting in place of injured Delano Howell, carried 21 times for a school-record 248 yards and a touchdown as the fourth-ranked Indians (8-1, 4-0) romped past Burbank (3-6, 0-4) at Burroughs High of Burbank, setting up a showdown next week against Canyon of Canyon Country for the league title.

Casselberry had rushed for only 282 yards in eight previous games.

Hart of Newhall's Tyler Lyon completed 12 of 30 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown and ran for two more scores.

 29: Matt Paneno intercepted a pass with 36 seconds remaining as the visiting Spartans (7-2, 3-1) held off San Marino (0-9, 0-4).

The Titans rallied from a 29-0 deficit to tie the score on Royce Stuteville's 15-yard pass to Matt Forgatch early in the fourth quarter. La Canada responded with an eight-play, 90-yard drive, culminating on LaVelle Peterson's 13-yard touchdown run.

--Muir 43, Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest.  0: The visiting Mustangs (7-2, 4-0) scored touchdowns on their first five possessions and romped past Crescenta Valley of La Crescenta (3-6, 3-1) in a Pacific League title showdown at Glendale High.

Crescenta Valley was limited to 96 total yards.

--Pasadena 31, Hoover 27: Jeff Willlard's interception late in the fourth quarter set up Andrew Bell's 65-yard touchdown run that sealed the Bulldogs' victory at Temple City High School.

Andrew rushed for 211 yards and four touchdowns to lead Pasadena (3=6, 2-2). Hoover (3-6, 0-4) was led by Alex Pantoja, who rushed for 127 yards on 18 carries and scored two touchdowns.

--Highland 31, Quartz Hill 24: Micah Littlejohn's 6-yard touchdown run in the second overtime carried the Bulldogs (4-5, 3-2), who moved into position for the league's third playoff berth.

Visiting Quartz Hill (5-4, 2-3) took a 14-10 lead as Marshall Mora MORA, In civil law.
