The detectives apparently returned fire without calling for backup.

``There's a big question mark, a big cloud,'' Zine said. ``We need to resolve the cloud. We can't let this type of thing linger and fester fester /fes·ter/ (fes´ter) to suppurate superficially.

Southeast Division patrol officers heard gunfire near 91st and Stanford streets but were not promptly told there had been an officer-involved shooting.

The target of the criticism was Deputy Chief Michael Berkow, whose officers reportedly left the scene without notifying patrol officers who might have been able to find the assailants.

Berkow said he pulled his officers off the street immediately to protect their identities, but otherwise carried out all proper protocols.

Zine said he hoped to meet today with Berkow to discuss the case.

``We need to get to the truth of the matter,'' said Zine, who talked with Berkow about the incident Monday. ``(Berkow) did say there were mistakes made. Well, how big, how small, were those mistakes?''

Zine was also expected to introduce a motion to have Bratton address the full City Council on the matter.

Councilman Bernard Parks, a mayoral candidate, wrote a letter to Bratton on Monday expressing disappointment with the department and asking for a discussion of the incident before the council's Public Safety Committee.

``It is blatantly obvious that information on an officer-involved shooting, especially one with very serious officer misconduct allegations, should not be a secret,'' Parks wrote.
