While doing a routine check of the home, a property management company employee found the man inside and called police to report a burglary in progress, Alba said. Two LAPD West Valley Division officers went to the rear of the home about 11:30 a.m., found a broken window and saw the man inside, said LAPD Officer Charlotte Broughton. Officers ordered him out, but he did not respond, Broughton said. Police then tried to use pepper spray to force him out - to no avail. ``The suspect started to climb out the window and pointed a rifle at the officers,'' Broughton said. One of the officers, whose name was not released, fired one round at the upper body of the man, police said. The man later died at a hospital. If they hadn't shot him, he would have shot someone else.'' Foster said the man was struggling financially, holding yard sales and renting out rooms to make ends meet.
