LAPD - Los Angeles Police Department. grant funds, $7.5 million this time, much of it to pay for the department's new computer-assisted crime-analysis system, FASTRAC. Two days after Riordan said the city would receive $133 million to hire 710 new police officers, the mayor said three additional grants totaling $7.5 million have been awarded by the federal government. ``These three grants from the Department of Justice will help Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. fight crime on many levels,'' Riordan said in a statement. ``New technology will help our Police Department increase efficiency, new equipment will protect us from terrorist threats and new intervention techniques will help us raise awareness and stop domestic violence before it takes place,'' Riordan added. U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer said the grants would result in efficiencies that would be the equivalent of putting 225 new police officers on the street. ``The federal government is a committed partner in California's fight against crime,'' Boxer said. About $6.5 million will go toward the creation of an evidence-tracking system, provide laptop computers to field officers to streamline their ability to write reports and support the Los Angeles Police Department's statistical analysis program Focus, Accountability, Strategy, Teamwork, Response and Coordination.
