LANDSLIDES, LIQUEFACTION LURK BELOW; MAPS IDENTIFY MOST-UNSTABLE SITES.

Byline: Patricia Farrell Aidem Daily News Staff Writer

Local canyons and land along the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  Valley's waterways The list of waterways is a link page for any river, canal, estuary or firth.

are marked as hazardous on geologic maps released Friday that show areas prone to landslides or water-saturated ground failure in an earthquake.

Miles and miles of land set for development are in the hazardous zones identified by the state Department of Conservation.

The good news is that land prone to liquefaction liquefaction, change of a substance from the solid or the gaseous state to the liquid state. Since the different states of matter correspond to different amounts of energy of the molecules making up the substance, energy in the form of heat must either be supplied to  or quake-induced landslides can nearly always be reinforced to sustain development, said Allan Barrows, a senior engineering geologist An engineering geologist is a geologist trained in the discipline of engineering geology. Many organizations and governments have programs for the qualification, testing and certification of engineering geologists as a protection to the public.  with the department's Division of Mines and Geology.

``What these preliminary maps show are areas where earthquakes can trigger ground failures,'' Barrows said. ``In strong shaking collapses can occur, but they can all be mitigated by engineering or grading.''

The intent of the maps is to improve future construction, not to provide ammunition to those who oppose development, Barrows said. Most cities and counties in California The U.S. state of California is divided into fifty-eight counties. Counties are responsible for all elections, property-tax collection, maintenance of public records such as deeds, and local-level courts within their borders, as well as providing law enforcement (through the county  already require reinforced construction in such areas, he added.

Geologic studies confirm that sandy soil surrounds the Santa Clara River Santa Clara River may refer to:

  • Santa Clara River (Utah), a river in Utah, United States
  • Carmen River, a river in Mexico that is sometimes called the Santa Clara River
bed and its tributaries. That condition combined with a high groundwater table - when water is found less than 40 feet from the surface - can create liquefaction in an earthquake, causing structures to collapse.

Similarly, quakes trigger landslides in mountains with rocky or sandy soil because the surface does not easily compact, Barrows said.

One such area is the region southwest of Castaic Junction where The Newhall Land and Farming Company The Newhall Land and Farming Company is a land management company based in Valencia, California, United States. The company is responsible for the master community planning of Valencia, as well as the management of farm land elsewhere in the state.  plans its 24,000-home Newhall Ranch, a development that will include large-scale commercial and industrial development as well as schools, parks and other public amenities.

While the area is labeled hazardous in geological studies, Barrows calls it ``just another piece of California.''

``There are lots of civil engineering procedures,'' he said. ``There's nothing geologically frightening about the region if you know in advance what you're dealing with, if you grade massively to clear that soft soil and you reinforce your structures.''
