Assistant Superintendent Assistant Superintendent, or Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was a rank used by police forces in the British Empire. It was usually the lowest rank that could be held by a European officer, most of whom joined the police at this rank.  Tim Azevedo said he made the decision early Thursday afternoon after visiting several area high schools with Superintendent David Vierra and seeing thick smoke from the Day Fire in Ventura County.

``The smoke is really bad even though the fire is further than it's been,'' Azevedo said. ``We wanted to err on the side of caution.''

The Canyon/Lancaster game was scheduled for Thursday because the William S. Hart Union High School District, to which Canyon belongs, does not permit games to be played today in observance of Rosh Hashanah Rosh Hashanah

The game will not be rescheduled, Lancaster High athletic director Casey Jones said.

Canyon athletic director Marlene Holomon said efforts were made by both schools to reschedule re·sched·ule
