The city's location and wide open spaces put it in position to benefit from Southern California's economic growth; a $1.5 million anti-crime effort is targeting gangs; and a national softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. The two-pronged effort aims for more efficient prosecution of gang-related crime, and offers education and counseling to gang members who seek to go straight.

Rite Aid Corporation is one of the nation's leading drugstore chains.  distribution center, covering more than 30 acres under one roof and expected to begin hiring in March, will employ at least 500.

Roberts said other warehouses and distribution centers may be built in the same area, though he wouldn't identify the companies.

``There are other warehouse agencies looking at us and we are looking at them,'' said Roberts.
