LANCASTER LIBRARY SEEKS DONATIONS FOR NEW FACILITY.

LANCASTER - A Lancaster library gift fund has been established to upgrade and expand the book and materials collection for the new public library scheduled to open this fall.

Funding for the new building comes from a joint venture of the city of Lancaster The City of Lancaster (2002 population: 133,914) is a local government district with city status in Lancashire, England. Its main town is Lancaster, from which it obtained its city status. Other towns in the district include Morecambe, Heysham, Slyne, and Carnforth.  and Los Angeles County. Assistance is needed to fill the shelves of the new library, however.

Gift contribution levels are as follows: sponsor, $10-$49; founding member, $50-$99; silver circle, $100-$499; and golden circle, $500 and up.

Sponsors names will be listed on the dedication program for the library grand opening, founding members names also will be in a book on permanent display in the library and silver and golden circle members will be given special recognition.

Gift list categories are as follows: Group A, materials for adults such as books, audio-visual materials and magazines; Group B, materials for children; Group C, homework help center network including computers and tutorial software; and Group D, equipment such as display cases, PCs, monitors, and video/data projector.

Checks can be made out to Los Angeles County Public Library Foundation and brought or mailed to the library at 1150 W. Ave. J, Lancaster, Calif. 93534. Indicate what category you would like the money used for and if it is given in memory of someone.

PALMDALE - Sixteen-year-old Adam Wooten has earned the rank of Eagle Scout.

For his Eagle Scout community service project Adam created and installed nine plant identification signs around the nature center at Devil's Punchbowl Punchbowl, hill, 500 ft (152 m) high, in the city of Honolulu, SE Oahu island, Hawaii. In the bowllike extinct volcanic crater at the summit (reached by a scenic drive) is the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, for those killed in World War II.  County Park.

Park rangers gave special instructions on making the signs so they would not be so easy to vandalize, Adam said.

"It was something that needed to be done and it helped sharpen some building skills," he said.

Adam, a member of Troop 708 and son of Michael and Judith Wooten of Palmdale, also earned his On My Honor award.

LANCASTER - The city was honored at the Governor's Awards Ceremony last month as the grand prize winner in the Healthy City Partnership category for their bicycle safety program.

LANCASTER - The sixth annual Antelope Valley WalkAmerica for 1996 will be April 27 at Lancaster City Park and April 28 at Edwards Air Force Base Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. It is one of the largest air force bases in the United States and has the world's longest runway. .

WalkAmerica, the March of Dimes' single largest fund-raising event, is to raise money for research and programs to prevent birth defects birth defects, abnormalities in physical or mental structure or function that are present at birth. They range from minor to seriously deforming or life-threatening. A major defect of some type occurs in approximately 3% of all births.  and infant mortality.

The 1996 goal for the Antelope Valley is to have 2,000 walkers participate and raise $100,000, said local WalkAmerica special events coordinator Deborah Robertson. Last year some 1,500 people took part and raised $87,000.

, corporations and organizations all take part in the annual walk-athon and officials are expecting the event to grow by 20 percent this year over 1995.

Participants are asked to sign up sponsors before the walk and try for a minimum of $25, Robertson said. Prizes include a tote bag for $75 in pledges and a T-shirt for $125 in pledges.

The four local Rotary Clubs will again provide a barbecue lunch afterward.

Registration will begin at 7 a.m. at Lancaster City Park and walking will start about 8 a.m. on an eight-mile tour from the park to 25th Street West to Lancaster Boulevard down to Fern Avenue and back to the park. There will be eight checkpoints along the way with drinks and supporters with words of encouragement, Robertson said.

AGUA DULCE - The Spring Boutique of the Agua Dulce Women's Club will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the club, 33201 Agua Dulce Canyon Road.

There will be crafts, a bake sale, jewelry, Easter baskets, a raffle drawing every half hour, gifts of all kinds and lunch will be served.
