LANCASTER CHOIR PICKED TO VISIT N.Y.

LANCASTER -- The Lancaster United Methodist Church United Methodist Church, in the United States, religious body formed by the union in 1968 of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Church (see Methodism).  Chancel chancel, primarily that part of the church close to the altar and used by the officiating clergy.  in a 300th celebration of the birth of hymn writer Charles Wesley, will perform special concerts Saturday and Sunday to raise money for its trip.

The Festival of Hymns, a compilation of many favorite old hymns, will be performed at 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the Lancaster United Methodist Church sanctuary, 918 W. Lancaster Blvd.

The choir has been picked to join with other choirs in New York City's Avery Fisher Hall Avery Fisher Hall, located in New York City, is a part of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts complex. It is the home of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. The hall contains 2,738 seats.  in Lincoln Center on Feb.18 for the 2007 Wesley Tercentenary ter·cen·ten·a·ry

Charles Wesley and his older brother John were the spiritual founders of the Wesleyan Methodist Movement. Charles' hymns include ``Hark! The Herald Angels Sing'' and ``Christ the Lord Is Risen Today.''

The concert will premiere a newly commissioned work, composed by Andrew Fowler of Myrtle Beach, S.C. The 40-minute work, titled ``Directions for Singing,'' is based on John Wesley's instructional aphorisms regarding the use of music in the church. A choir of 350 singers will be accompanied by a full orchestra.

Various familiar Charles Wesley hymn texts will be set to the music of a number of historic composers as well as original scores by Fowler. A narrator NARRATOR. Obsolete.  dressed and speaking as John Wesley will be featured, and the audience will even be drawn into singing parts of this work.

The Lancaster United Methodist Church choir is the only Methodist choir from California that has been invited to participate in this historic event. The choir expects to do a couple of more concerts this year to aid its fundraising for the trip to New York.
