LAN Access Corp. releases version 1.1 of LANA(TM), The Telecommuter Server(TM), making the highest performance product even more user-friendly.

TORRANCE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 14, 1994--LAN Access Corp. Wednesday announced the release of version 1.1 of LANA LANA Latency-Associated Nuclear Antigen

, The Telecommuter A person who telecommutes. See telecommuting.  Server, expanding the feature set of the first remote node server to support data rates to 230 Kbps.

LANA is a complete end-to-end solution that includes a RISC-based server, client software and a Windows-based manager. With its performance capabilities, multiprotocol support and ease of use, LANA performs on complex enterprise networks and meets the rigorous demands of telecommuters, mobile users and small branch offices.

New features benefit remote users and network managers alike by adding to the ease with which management is performed and connections are established.

LANA now supports Native IP over PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) The most popular method for transporting IP packets over a serial link between the user and the ISP. Developed in 1994 by the IETF and superseding the SLIP protocol, PPP establishes the session between the user's computer and the ISP using , so TCP/IP TCP/IP

workstation or a Macintosh workstation without having to load any additional software. Also, dynamic IP addressing is supported to simplify the assignment of IP addresses.

With this feature, the LANAserver accepts IP addresses from a RARP (Reverse ARP) A TCP/IP protocol used by a diskless workstation to obtain its IP address. Upon startup, the client station sends out a RARP request in an Ethernet frame to the RARP server, which returns the layer 3 address for a layer 2 address (performing the opposite  or BOOTP (BOOTstrap Protocol) A TCP/IP protocol used by a diskless workstation or network computer (NC) to obtain its IP address and other network information such as server address and default gateway.  server on the network, so administrators do not have to assign addresses manually. To the remote users, the benefit is that they do not have to enter an IP address when dialing in, because the LANAserver negotiates with the TCP/IP package to produce an IP address for that session.

The LANAserver can assign IP addresses to remote users even without an RARP or BOOTP server.

LANA also supports standard TCP/IP using ODI and NDIS (Network Driver Interface Specification) A network driver interface from Microsoft. See network driver interface.

, in order to support multiprotocol sessions. Compatibility via Novell's ODINSUP ODINSUP Open Data link Interface - Network driver interface specification SUPport  is available for users who want to utilize both the ODI and NDIS protocol stacks on a single session. The new native NDIS support reduces the amount of conventional memory needed by 6K.

Adding to a broad range of management tools, LANA is now the only remote access server to offer a detailed log of events that can be exported to any word processing or spreadsheet program. Network administrators can easily create a variety of reports, such as one that lists usage by department, or one that track failed log-in attempts.

With access to more than 1,000 events, administrators can easily track security, diagnostic and configuration-change information. From the Windows-based manager, users select the specific type of information they would like to have saved, in order to make the best use of available memory.

The log is stored in non-volatile memory on the server, and can be saved in either text or comma delimited format for export. If the memory is filled to capacity, the newest information is stored over the oldest.

Establishing a remote connection is made even easier with the release of a Windows dialer for Novell NetWare VLMs. Remote users can now initiate and terminate network sessions directly from Windows or from DOS. The DOS dialer is modeled after the Windows dialer in terms of the graphical user interface graphical user interface (GUI)

Computer display format that allows the user to select commands, call up files, start programs, and do other routine tasks by using a mouse to point to pictorial symbols (icons) or lists of menu choices on the screen as opposed to having to
, so the two will look identical to the user.

This consistency is designed to minimize the amount of training required and simplify the ease of use for the remote user.

With the release of version 1.1, ease of use is further enhanced with context-sensitive help in both the LANAclient dialer and the LANAmanager. Now getting answers to questions is as easy as pointing and clicking on a toolbar button. Users simply click on the help button, and then on the active screen, in order to go directly to the pertaining section of the Help dialog box.

If users' questions are not answered by the on-line help, they can also call LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  Access' free Technical Support at 310/328-9700, where a responsive staff is on hand to quickly answer questions.

The LANAserver supports all popular V.34 modems, and setup strings for an additional 200 modems have been added to the 100 currently supported. This feature saves time and simplifies configuration, since users do not have to enter the strings manually. Instead, users simply select their modem from the list in the Windows-based LANAmanger, to be associated with either one port or a selection of several ports, and the LANAserver takes care of the setup strings for them.

LANA, The Telecommuter Server, is available in 2, 4 and 8 port models, and has been shipping since July 1994.

LAN Access was established in March 1993. The company designs, manufactures and markets a family of high-performance remote LAN access solutions that provide business travelers and telecommuters with the complete functionality of the corporate backbone LAN via the public telephone network. The company distributes its products worldwide through value-added resellers, OEMs and factory direct.
