LALAS ENDS STREAK GOAL GIVES GALAXY FIRST WIN IN FOUR GAMES GALAXY 1, CHICAGO 0.

Byline: Fred J. Robledo Staff Writer

PASADENA - Carlos Ruiz doesn't intimidate or dominate a soccer match the way Shaquille O'Neal Shaquille Rashaun O'Neal (pronounced "shak-KEEL") (born March 6, 1972 in Newark, New Jersey), frequently referred to simply as Shaq, is an American professional basketball player, generally regarded as one of the most dominant in the National Basketball Association (NBA).  can for the Lakers, but if you take away the 10 goals he has scored this season, the Galaxy would be 1-8-1 this season.

Without Ruiz on Saturday - he was suspended after the MLS See multilevel security.  determined he punched the stomach of a Colorado player last week - Galaxy coach Sigi Schmid Siegfried "Sigi" Schmid (born March 20 1953 in Tübingen, West Germany) is a soccer coach who currently heads the Columbus Crew.

Schmid moved from Germany to Torrance, California in 1962. He received a B.S. in economics from UCLA in 1976, and an M.
needed someone to shoulder the scoring burden.

That person was Alexi Lalas Panayotis Alexander (Alexi) Lalas (born June 1 1970, Birmingham, Michigan) is a former Greek-American soccer defender, who became one of the most famous soccer players in the United States after he played in the 1994 FIFA World Cup. , whose sudden-death goal in last year's U.S. Open The term U.S. Open is applied to "open" United States national championships in a particular sport, in which anybody, amateur or professional, American or non-American may compete. The Galaxy played the final 21 minutes a man down because midfielder Peter Vagenas earned a red card for pulling on Chicago forward Ante Razov's shirt.

``From a mentality standpoint and a belief that it's not always focused on (Ruiz), we needed this,'' Lalas said. ``And I have to feel that he is happy to see us score and win without him.

``He (Ruiz) takes everything very personally, and he's been under a tremendous amount of pressure, especially with so many goals he has and nobody helping him. Anything we can do to take the pressure off and show that he doesn't have to be on 100 percent every day for this team to win is important.''

The shutout victory not only allowed Ruiz to hold his one-point lead over Razov (20-19) in the scoring race, but it ended a three-match losing streak, the Galaxy's longest since 1997.

The Eastern Conference-leading Fire (5-4-2) lost its fifth consecutive game to the Galaxy (5-5-2).

``Maybe if we could play them every week our record would be better,'' Schmid said. ``It's always a tough game against them, but I was looking forward to us playing them coming off the streak we were having, because the guys take a lot of pride playing against Chicago, and I knew their concentration would be at its maximum.''

Razov hit the crossbar in the 76th minute, but the Fire didn't have a shot on goal until Mike Nugent's in the 78th minute.

Galaxy goalie Kevin Hartman got the start over Matt Reis, who had given up eight goals in the three previous matches. Schmid didn't complain about the easy shutout.

``I was pleased with the shutout, that's been a big problem for us, because we haven't been getting them,'' Schmid. ``Hartman came up with a big save (against Nugent) with the game on the line, so that should be good for him.''
