LAKERS NOTEBOOK: SCOTT COULD SIGN WITH GREEK TEAM.

Byline: Howard Beck Daily News Staff Writer

Byron Scott might be trading ``Showtime'' for souvlaka, as the Lakers guard is mulling a multimillion-dollar offer to play in Greece.

Scott, 36, a fan favorite in his 11 seasons with the Lakers and a Los Angeles native, is negotiating with the Panathinaikos Athletic Club in Athens, said his agent, Leigh Steinberg.

Under salary cap and collective bargaining restrictions, the Lakers can offer Scott a maximum of $326,750.

``Obviously, the Lakers are restricted in terms of what they're able to offer Byron. Byron feels tremendous allegiance to Los Angeles and tremendous allegiance to the Lakers, but this may be an offer too good to refuse,'' Steinberg said.

Scott played for the Lakers from 1983-84 through 1992-93 and won three NBA titles. He returned as a free agent last season and averaged 18.2 minutes and 6.7 points per game as a reserve guard.

Scott grew up 14 blocks from the Forum in Inglewood and graduated from Morningside High School.

Harris also Athens-bound: Lakers head coach Del Harris has been named an assistant coach for USA Basketball's 1998 national team. He'll serve under head coach Rudy Tomjanovich.

The team will compete in the 1998 FIBA FIBA - Fédération Internationale de Basketball (International Basketball Federation)
FIBA - Fédération Internationale de Boxe Amateur
FIBA - Fellow of the International Biographical Association (Cambridge, UK)
FIBA - Fellowship of Israel and Black America
FIBA - Financial Institution Benefit Association, Inc.
FIBA - Florida International Bankers Association
World Championships of Basketball in Athens from July 29-Aug. 9. The international competition is held every four years and contested by 16 national teams. As in the Olympics, professional players are allowed to compete for their countries.

Team sets exhibiton slate: The Lakers will open training camp at College of the Desert in Palm Desert on Oct. 3 and begin a six-game exhibition- season schedule Oct. 9, the team announced. The Lakers open against Denver in San Diego.
