On a busy day, the Lakers also waived veteran big man Corie Blount Corie Kasoun Blount (born January 4, 1969 in Monrovia, California) is an American former professional basketball player. A 6'9" power forward/center, Blount starred at the University of Cincinnati during the early 1990s, where he helped his team reach the Final Four in 1992 , who struggled to recover from a foot injury suffered early in training camp, and exercised the fourth-year option in Brian Cook's contract in advance of Wednesday night's opener at Denver. ``We know that we've got some players that are performing well,'' Lakers coach Phil Jackson

Players can move from the inactive list to the active roster on a game-by-game basis. The decision to keep Profit and Green came as a surprise, considering Jackson gave assurances Thursday that Blount would be on the roster come Monday even if he was not recovered from a sprained ligament on the bottom of his left foot. Blount, an 11-year veteran who did not play last season after undergoing knee and ankle surgeries, practiced sparingly in October and sat out all eight exhibition games. But Blount had experience playing in the triangle offense for Jackson. Without Blount, the Lakers will enter the season with a frontcourt rotation of Kwame Brown, Chris Mihm, Slava Medvedenko, Cook and Bynum, who turned 18 only last week. Lamar Odom also will play some at power forward. Cook got the news he had been awaiting for nearly a month when the Lakers decided to exercise his option for the 2006-07 season. It was confirmation for the 24-year-old forward that his career is on track and the work he put in this summer paid off. ``It definitely gave me a boost of confidence to know that the people that drafted me still want me,'' said Cook, who will make $1.8 million next season. ``I'm just trying to improve every year . . . and try to make myself better day by day.'' --Clock's ticking: Although Jackson said he wanted to see Aaron McKie play a 28-minute role this season, the veteran guard likely won't approach that number Wednesday. McKie averaged only 12.6 minutes in the exhibition season and still is searching in the triangle offense. ``I'm not going to guarantee anything for Aaron right off the bat,'' Jackson said. ``We'll see how it goes and hopefully he'll find his way along in the game.'' --Out of sight: How out of touch was Jackson during his season away from coaching? He said Monday that he didn't even watch the Lakers' 89-78 opening night victory against Denver, one of the few highlights in an otherwise depressing season.
