LAKERS NOTEBOOK: LAKERS CRY FOUL OVER FLAGRANT CALL ON O'NEAL IN GAME 1.

Byline: Howard Beck Staff Writer

One questionable call in Sunday's playoff opener will stay with the Lakers and, they hope, won't haunt them down the road.

Officials tagged Shaquille O'Neal Shaquille Rashaun O'Neal (pronounced "shak-KEEL") (born March 6, 1972 in Newark, New Jersey), frequently referred to simply as Shaq, is an American professional basketball player, generally regarded as one of the most dominant in the National Basketball Association (NBA).  with a flagrant foul A flagrant foul is a serious contact foul involving unnecessary and/or excessive and/or intentional contact in sport. ``I think they almost like to saddle players with it so that they keep them restricted to playing under wraps,'' coach Phil Jackson

 said.

The Lakers disagreed with the call at the time but are more concerned with the potential long-term consequences if O'Neal were to get another flagrant anytime in the postseason.

``That's our only concern, is to lose a ballplayer because of something that's a minor retaliation,'' Jackson said.

General manager Mitch Kupchak Mitchell "Mitch" Kupchak (born May 24 1954 in Hicksville, New York) is a retired American basketball player and current general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers since the 2000-01 NBA season after predecessor Jerry West moved to the Memphis Grizzlies organization.  called NBA vice president of operations Stu Jackson Stuart (Stu) Wayne Jackson (born December 11, 1955, in Reading, Pennsylvania), is an American former head coach and current executive in the National Basketball Association.  on Monday to request that the point be rescinded. After reviewing the game film, Jackson reaffirmed the call and the point remains.

``They created a flagrant the other day,'' Phil Jackson said, ``and that's something that obviously restricts a player's ability to move with the same amount of freedom. And the league was not forthright or bending on the issue of flagrant fouls. ... When you watch the fouls that were committed on Shaq, and then the one he gets called a flagrant on, it's almost humorous in some sense of the word.''

Said O'Neal, ``I didn't know I had a flagrant foul. When you push somebody, that's a flagrant foul?''

It was as far as Stu Jackson's concerned.

``Stu knows what he can do with that (flagrant) foul,'' O'Neal said.

``Actually, it makes it feel a lot better,'' he said. ``I'm not too concerned with it. (The Blazers will) probably go after it, they'll probably hurt it a little bit, but it's something I'm just going to have to play through.''

Does it hurt?

``Only when I sneeze sneeze, involuntary violent expiration of air through the nose and mouth. It results from stimulation of the nervous system in the nose, causing sudden contraction of the muscles of expiration. ,'' he said.

HERO OF THE GAME:

Rick Fox stepped up with 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists, dazzling the crowd and thrilling his teammates with a pair of impressive dunks, including one he threw over 7-3 Arvydas Sabonis.

GOAT OF THE GAME

Arvydas Sabonis. Can a 7-3, 300-hundred pound man vanish into thin air? He can when Shaquille O'Neal is around. Sabonis practically waved the white flag at Shaq, barely challenging him on a handful of powerhouse dunks, and rarely putting up a fight on the boards, taking down just one in 17 first-half minutes and five for the game. Sabonis had 11 points.

KEY TO THE GAME

The Lakers buckled down and defended in the second quarter, making up a five-point deficit to build a 55-46 lead at halftime and setting a defensive tone that would last the remainder of the game. After allowing the Blazers to shoot 72.2 percent in the first quarter, L.A. put the clamps on and took control.

KEY MATCHUP

The Blazers needed a third scoring option to emerge out of Damon Stoudamire and Steve Smith, but Bryant made sure Smith wasn't a factor, using his quickness to bother him defensively and outscoring him 25-16.

LOOK AHEAD

The Lakers look to close out the Blazers Sunday in Portland and with the confidence level they've established in the two wins, this one might be over in three.

QUARTER-BY-QUARTER BREAKDOWN:

FIRST

Scottie Pippen and Rasheed Wallace combine for nine of the Blazers first 14 baskets to help Portland build a 25-16 lead midway through the period. The Lakers gathered themselves to close the quarter on a 9-4 lead to bring it to 29-25. Portland shot 72.2 percent from the field (13 of 18). Not a good sign: Kobe picks up two fouls in six minutes.

BLAZERS 29, LAKERS 25

SECOND

The Blazers 72.2 percent shooting fizzled to 22.2 (4 of 18) in the second, shut down by the Lakers active, aggressive defense and their work on the boards (14-7). Portland's poor shooting, combined with the offensive surge of Rick Fox (nine points, 14 in the half) and Shaquille O'Neal (eight points, 16 in the half) enabled L.A. to outscore Verb 1. outscore - score more points than one's opponents

THIRD QUARTER

The Lakers, O'Neal in particular, continued to roll, using their defense to bother Wallace and Pippen, who combined to score one point in the quarter. They also got a lift offensively from Bryant, who had 10 points in the period.

LAKERS 80, BLAZERS 65

FOURTH

The Lakers didn't need a Blazers collapse in the fourth, but they got one anyway, allowing L.A. to cruise to a blowout victory and a commanding 2-0 series lead. Portland cracked barely four minutes into the period, enabling the Lakers to build 19-point lead by turning the ball over, getting technical fouls and looking dazed daze
