Although he still can't drive, Jackson was a regular at practice last week and has been watching the Lakers' exhibition games at home with Buss.

``He's really excited to get back to work,'' Buss said in a phone interview Tuesday, ``but the doctors want to be careful that he doesn't overdo it.''

Before he had his hip replaced, Jackson joked about coaching a quarter in one of the Lakers' exhibition games Thursday and Friday at Staples Center This articlearticle or section has multiple issues:

. That is unlikely to happen, with Buss saying Jackson would not return unless it was for good.

The Lakers' final two exhibition games will be played Sunday in San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  -- which would require Jackson to endure a long bus trip -- and Oct. 26 in Anaheim.

After watching the Lakers play an abysmal first half in Tuesday's 96-91 loss to Sacramento, assistant coach Kurt Rambis Darrell Kurt Rambis (born February 25, 1958 in Cupertino, California) is an American former professional basketball player and current assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers.  joked about letting a ``red hot'' Jackson take over at practice today.

McKie hurt: The Lakers already were playing without Kobe Bryant Kobe Bean Bryant (born July 23 1978(1978--)) is an American All-Star shooting guard in the National Basketball Association (NBA) who plays for the Los Angeles Lakers. , Chris Mihm Christopher (Chris) Steven Mihm (born July 16, 1979 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) is an American professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA. He stands 7 feet tall (213 cm) and weighs 265 pounds (120 kg). , Kwame Brown and Shammond Williams when Aaron McKie was lost to a back injury in the second minute Tuesday.

McKie has been bothered by his back throughout training camp and will see a specialist today. He has a guaranteed contract, but his health is a question mark after playing in only 14 games last season.

``I don't even want to begin to start speculating,'' McKie said.

Ugly half: The Lakers missed 23 of 35 shots, turned over the ball 14 times and trailed 49-35 after their worst half of the preseason.

The half ended with center Andrew Bynum taking out the ball and throwing a baseball pass over Devin Green's head and out of bounds, giving the Kings the ball underneath the Lakers' basket and leading to a Mike Bibby 3-pointer.

``Some of it might be attributed to the number of days we spent in Las Vegas,'' Rambis said. ``I let them know that it's still training camp, it's still preseason, guys are still fighting for starting jobs, time, positions on this team.''

The Lakers came back from nine points down to take the lead in the fourth quarter behind Sasha Vujacic, Jordan Farmar and Ronny Turiaf, who scored a team-high 15 points.

The game was decided in the final three minutes as John Salmons beat Green as part of a three-point play. J.R. Pinnock, Farmar and Green all missed shots late for the Lakers.

Green, fighting for a roster spot, drove for a three-point play to put the Lakers in front with 5:26 left but missed 5 of 6 shots in the fourth quarter.
