Byline: ROSS SILER Staff Writer

CHICAGO -- The Lakers have nominated coach Phil Jackson

Assuming nine championships and a career 893-361 record are qualification enough, Jackson would become a member of the Class of 2007.

The Hall will announce its 24 finalists Feb. 16 as part of the NBA NBA

Those finalists will then be voted on by the 24-member honors committee. It takes 18 votes to be elected and the newest Hall class is announced at the Final Four.

To be enshrined while he is still active, Jackson had to have coached for 25 years. He is in his 16th NBA season but also served as a head coach for the CBA's Albany Patroons The Albany Patroons are a basketball team that play in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) (and played in the United States Basketball League (USBL) from 2006 until 2007).  and as an assistant coach for the NewJersey Nets.

``I was made aware of it,'' Jackson said, ``and yet still have some physical issues that I still have to think about before I really embrace that possibility. But it's an honor to be thought about.''

Looking up: Jackson could be forgiven for thinking United Center looked a little different on this trip back to the Windy City.

The Bulls moved their banner honoring Jackson from its old spot with the team's retired numbers -- Michael Jordan This article is about the former basketball player. For other uses, see Michael Jordan (disambiguation).

``It's great to be sitting beside my buddy Jerry Krause up there,'' said Jackson, who clashed with Krause during the championship years.

Kobe and Phil: The comparisons will always be made between Jackson and Jordan and Jackson and Kobe Bryant, especially in this city, where six championship banners hang indoors and the Jordan statue sits outdoors.

While Bryant saw Jordan as having the freedom to roam The freedom to roam, or everyman's right is a term describing the general public's right to access certain public or privately owned land for recreation and exercise. The term is sometimes called right of public access to the wilderness or the right to roam.  on a veteran Bulls team, Bryant said he viewed his own role as being ``a compass'' for the Lakers and ``an extension of Phil'' on the court.

Bryant also described his relationship with Jackson as being 180 degrees different than before.

They have been on the same wavelength at least, with Bryant calling out the same sequences during games as Jackson from the bench.

``We're really, really close, from talking during the games, talking in practice or off days,'' Bryant said.
