LAKERS NOTEBOOK: INJURED MCKIE NOT ENJOYING SPECTATOR STATUS.

But McKie hasn't been surprised in watching the Lakers' improved play in recent weeks, especially on their six-game road trip.

``The guys are coming together, like I visualized it,'' McKie said. ``It was a rough start for us but we were learning something new. We've got a lot of new faces, a new coach ... although Phil has been here before, he doesn't have the same personnel he had before.

``It's different, and things like that take time. This is a young team. They don't really grasp that or understand that. This is a long race here. The funny part about it is everybody is going Clipper clipper, type of sailing ship, designed for speed. Long and narrow, the clipper had the greatest beam aft of the center; the bow cleaved the waves; and the ship carried, besides topgallant and royal sails, skysails and moonrakers—a veritable cloud of sails.  crazy and we're only like 15 games into the season.

``Of course, you want to start on top but you want to gradually work your way up. You want to be playing your best basketball in the second half of the season. I think the best is yet to come for us.''
