Byline: Ross Siler Staff Writer

SAN DIEGO San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  - A sore lower back kept Seattle SuperSonics The Seattle SuperSonics (or simply Sonics) are an American professional basketball team based in Seattle, Washington. They play in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Their mascot's name is Squatch.  guard Ray Allen Not to be confused with Ray Alan or Allan Ray.
Walter Ray Allen (born July 20, 1975) is an American professional basketball player for the NBA's Boston Celtics, for whom he plays shooting guard. He has also played for the Milwaukee Bucks and Seattle SuperSonics.

An injured little finger, by comparison, was the last thing that would stop Lakers forward Caron Butler James Caron Butler, known as Caron Butler (pronounced Kuh-RONN) (born March 13 1980, in Racine, Wisconsin), is an American professional basketball player, currently starting at small forward for the NBA's Washington Wizards. .

On a night that was supposed to belong to Allen's eagerly anticipated meeting with Kobe Bryant Kobe Bean Bryant (born July 23 1978(1978--)) is an American All-Star shooting guard in the National Basketball Association (NBA) who plays for the Los Angeles Lakers. , Butler ended up stealing the show. He scored 18 points, including 16 in a row for the Lakers during the first quarter, in an easy 117-91 victory.

Butler played without a splint splint, rigid or semiflexible device for the immobilization of displaced or fractured parts of the body. Most commonly employed for fractures of bones, a splint may be a first-aid measure that allows the patient to be moved without displacing the injured part, or it  on his injured finger and was nothing short of sensational. He hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key with the shot clock expiring, then followed with a pull-up jumper over Nick Collison Nicholas John Collison (born 26 October 1980 in Orange City, Iowa) is an American professional basketball player, currently a power forward for the Seattle SuperSonics of the National Basketball Association, and well known in basketball circles for his accomplishments at the  on successive possessions.

12 times in the quarter and converted 11 free throws. By the time he headed to the bench with 22.4 seconds remaining, the Lakers' fears about Butler and the partially torn tendon in his right pinky had been eased.

Bryant and Allen, meanwhile, will have to wait until Dec. 14 in Seattle to settle scores. Allen had called Bryant ``very selfish'' after their exhibition opener earlier this month and Bryant offered a profane response when asked about Allen on Sunday.

But Allen did not dress for the game and Bryant had to settle for matching up against Antonio Daniels Antonio Ray Daniels (born March 19 1975 in Columbus, Ohio) is an American professional basketball player currently with the Washington Wizards of the NBA. After playing college basketball at Bowling Green State University, he was selected by the Vancouver Grizzlies (now Memphis . Bryant had two points in nine minutes while the Lakers extended a seven-point lead at the end of the first quarter to a 62-39 advantage at halftime.

--Grant in aid: What made Brian Grant's 22-point, 11-rebound performance Sunday night Sunday Night, later named Michelob Presents Night Music, was an NBC late-night television show which aired for two seasons between 1988 and 1990 as a showcase for jazz and eclectic musical artists.  against Phoenix especially pleasing wasn't that Grant led the Lakers in scoring or went 10 of 12 from the field. It was that the 30-year-old forward logged 24 much-needed minutes.

Grant hadn't played more than 18 minutes in any of the five previous games and sat out the first while recovering from a sore neck. He also is fighting tendinitis in both knees. Even when Grant did play, Tomjanovich said he often asked to come out.

But Grant believes he is making progress, with a week to go before opening night. The 24 minutes also seemed about on the mark for what Grant will play this season backing up Chris Mihm and Lamar Odom.

``My playing schedule hasn't been Rudy T. at all, it's been me,'' Grant said. ``He'll look at me, kind of give me a nod, 'Do you want to go or not?' I've kind of stayed back, just trying to kind of build myself up. (Sunday,) he wanted me to keep going, I went out there and had a pretty decent night.''

--For comparisons sake: The Lakers improved to 5-2, guaranteeing a winning exhibition season for the first time in seven years, and Bryant has had his two highest scoring games in the losses.

Bryant is averaging 17.4 points in the Lakers wins and 35 in the losses. On the other side, he is shooting 36.4 percent in the wins compared to 51.1 percent in the losses.

There are reasons to explain the phenomenon, namely that Bryant has played longer in the losses than wins. He also had to shoulder much of the load with the Lakers out of sync in their opener. But Tomjanovich was unwilling to consider other alternatives.

``You guys are analyzing that way,'' Tomjanovich said. ``We're just throwing a whole bunch of lineups out there and, I mean, I don't see any pattern. This is four games in five nights, I haven't analyzed anything like that. I don't see any correlation at all.''

--Odds and ends: Kareem Rush returned from a foot injury and had 10 points on 3 for 10 shooting in 26 minutes. ... Slava Medvedenko could return from a bruised heel Thursday.
