LAKERS GET THEIR PHIL; JACKSON TAKES OVER TEAM OF YOUNG STARS.

Byline: Howard Beck Staff Writer

To restore their former glory as rulers of the West, the Lakers are reaching East, and even to the Far East, to snare snare (snar) a wire loop for removing polyps and tumors by encircling them at the base and closing the loop.

Philip Douglas "Phil" Jackson (born September 17, 1945 in Deer Lodge, Montana) is the current coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, an American professional basketball team.
, armed with eight championship rings and several volumes of Eastern philosophy, will bring his winning touch and Zen approach to the Lakers when he is named head coach today.

Jackson agreed Tuesday to a five-year contract believed to be worth $30 million to $35 million. The deal was hammered out long-distance from Jackson's home in Montana, and he is set to sign it this morning.

``We have reached an agreement in principle with him,'' Lakers spokesman John Black confirmed Tuesday afternoon.

Lakers executive Jerry West

Jackson's agent, Todd Musberger, also was unavailable.

But this imminent partnership doesn't need much description. The deal speaks for itself.

In one transaction, the Lakers have taken one of the league's best young lineups and hitched it to one of the NBA's all-time winningest coaches - a combination that primes the club for its first championship since 1988.

It's a tribute to Jackson's success and reputation that the Lakers made the hire without so much as sitting in the same room with him. Most of the negotiations were conducted over the last two weeks through Musberger, and West did not even talk to Jackson - who was vacationing in Alaska - until Monday, when they spoke on the telephone.

The hire clearly signals a new era for the Lakers as they prepare to move into the $365 million Staples Center This articlearticle or section has multiple issues:

this fall. Having already invested in two of the NBA's best young stars, Shaquille O'Neal Shaquille Rashaun O'Neal (pronounced "shak-KEEL") (born March 6, 1972 in Newark, New Jersey), frequently referred to simply as Shaq, is an American professional basketball player, generally regarded as one of the most dominant in the National Basketball Association (NBA).  ($121 million) and Kobe Bryant Kobe Bean Bryant (born July 23 1978(1978--)) is an American All-Star shooting guard in the National Basketball Association (NBA) who plays for the Los Angeles Lakers.  ($71 million), the Lakers for the first time are investing heavily to obtain the best available coach.

At $6 or $7 million per season, Jackson easily becomes the highest-paid coach in franchise history, and his salary would rank him second in the league, based on last year's figures. His paycheck by far eclipses that of West's, the team's top basketball executive, who will make $3.5 million under a new contract that begins in September.

He was headed in the same direction this time, and was set to stick with interim coach Kurt Rambis Darrell Kurt Rambis (born February 25, 1958 in Cupertino, California) is an American former professional basketball player and current assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers. , who was elevated from assistant in February after the team fired Del Harris.

But two weeks ago, Buss changed course. Motivated by an 11-year title drought, the need to create excitement to fill a new, 20,000-seat arena, and the lack of widespread support for Rambis, Buss decided to contact Jackson.

At the time, Jackson was flirting with the Knicks and entertaining an extraordinary offer from the New Jersey Nets, who were prepared to offer in excess of $7 million and part ownership in the team.

But insiders say Jackson has long eyed the Lakers' job and simply needed an invitation and a fair offer. Even as he coached the Bulls to their sixth championship last year, Jackson openly mused about the idea of coaching the Lakers after a one-year sabbatical.

During his off-year, Jackson has devoted time to the presidential campaign of former Sen. Bill Bradley For other uses, see Bill Bradley (disambiguation) and William Bradley.

, his friend and former Knicks teammate. That campaign coincidentally brings Jackson to L.A. today, and to accommodate his political commitments, the Lakers are moving their noon press conference to the Beverly Hilton.

Once the excitement over Jackson's arrival settles, the Lakers will find a full plate of decisions ahead, starting with filling out the coaching staff.

Rambis, a Laker for 13 seasons as player and coach, has already been assured of a job in the organization, possibly on Jackson's staff. The fate of Larry Drew Larry Donnell Drew (born April 2 1958 in Kansas City, Missouri) is a retired American professional basketball player who was selected by the Detroit Pistons in the 1st round (17th overall) of the 1980 NBA Draft. , a Lakers assistant for seven years, is uncertain, as is the status of assistant Bill Bertka, a Lakers institution for 18 years.

If Jackson decides to install the ``triangle'' offense made famous in Chicago, he might hire its architect, Bulls assistant Tex Winter Morice Fredrick "Tex" Winter (born February 25 1922) is a successful American basketball coach and innovator of the triangle offense.

Tex Winter attended Huntington Park High School and went on to graduate from the University of Southern California in 1947, where he learned

But Jackson's arrival will mostly spawn stability. His presence should sate O'Neal, who was furious after the Lakers' playoff collapse to San Antonio San Antonio (săn ăntō`nēō, əntōn`), city (1990 pop. 935,933), seat of Bexar co., S central Tex., at the source of the San Antonio River; inc. 1837. . O'Neal had backed Rambis, but turned on him by the end of the season and might have considered exercising an opt-out clause in his contract.

Instead, O'Neal and Bryant, two of the purported heirs to Jordan's legacy, will get the opportunity to learn from MJ's longtime mentor.

The third piece of the triangle is the question mark; there are rumors that question mark might be former Bull Scottie Pippen Scottie Maurice Pippen (born September 25, 1965 in Hamburg, Arkansas) is a retired American professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association (NBA). . But several sources dispute reports that the Lakers have discussed sending Glen Rice Glen Anthony Rice (born May 28 1967, in Flint where he played for Flint Northwestern High School, Michigan) is a retired American NBA basketball player. The Rockets are refuting the reports outright. ``We're not going to do anything with Scottie,'' Houston vice president Bob Barr

 told the Houston Chronicle.

Ex-Bull Dennis Rodman, briefly a Laker this season, also doesn't figure to rejoin his former coach; team officials are loath to gamble on him again.

The Lakers do face a decision on Rice, their somewhat-disgruntled sharpshooter. If he fits into the new administration's plans, the Lakers can keep Rice for a one-year, $7.1 million option or let him become a free agent July 1 and give him a multiyear deal.

He might also be used as bait in a sign-and-trade deal to acquire a power forward or point guard, or to move up in the June 30 draft.

Whatever happens, the Lakers' ultimate agenda is clear. Jackson is here to win a championship, or several. And in between, to put a little Zen in Showtime.
