LAKERS ARE TIMELY DESPITE SCOREBOARD MALFUNCTION, THEY BEAT ATLANTA AS BRYANT SCORES 37 LAKERS 103, ATLANTA 97.

ATLANTA - Kobe Bryant Kobe Bean Bryant (born July 23 1978(1978--)) is an American All-Star shooting guard in the National Basketball Association (NBA) who plays for the Los Angeles Lakers.  scored 37 points, his fourth straight 30-point game to start the season...

, with a cord to the scoreboard unit going up in smoke, forcing the officials to keep time at the scorer's table.

That left the public address announcer counting down the shot clock for everyone in the building as well as providing updates on the score after every basket, not that it helped in the least.

Bryant said he had played games under such circumstances twice before, but those came in a summer league at a park. He improvised his own system for figuring out what the score was in the game, asking KCAL kcal kilocalorie.

``It was one of those nights where I just was hoping the clock was working and it was ticking off,'' Jackson added.

The Lakers (3-1) had lost the last two seasons in Atlanta and three of their past five trips here. They will play Minnesota tonight in the second game of perhaps their toughest back-to-back this season.

The second quarter defined the night, with the scoreboard short-circuiting two minutes in. Once the game resumed, Bryant suffered a scare with 6:40 left in the first half, crashing to the floor as Joe Johnson Joe Johnson may refer to:

(26 points) tied him up on the fastbreak.

Johnson grabbed Bryant by two hands and Bryant stayed on the ground for several minutes. He suffered a bruised right wrist on the play, but was not upset with Johnson, and went back at him the rest of the night.

Whether it was being dragged down by Johnson or the Lakers' overall struggles - they fell behind by 10 points in the first quarter - Bryant took things upon himself after that.

He once vowed not to stop running the triangle offense, no matter how bad things got, but the Lakers might not have survived without Bryant's game. Jackson said Bryant got caught up in playing ``mano-a-mano'' with Johnson but also credited him with single-handedly keeping his team in it.

``I just basically did what I've been doing since the start of the season, which is pick my spots,'' Bryant said. ``When we kind of need an outburst from me, then I'll carry the load a little bit. Then I'll step back and let everybody get in rhythm and then have another outburst.''

Bryant finished with 37 points on 15-for-26 shooting but it was an uncharacteristic night in which he was called for five fouls and also missed four free throws. Still, the Lakers closed the third quarter on a 16-6 run to take a 79-69 lead into the final period.

But Tuesday will be remembered foremost for the clock meltdown. On one Atlanta possession, the public address announcer intoned in·tone

that five seconds were left on the shot clock.

After a comparative eternity, Al Harrington pushed in a shot, leaving Devean George flailing his arms in futile protest. The Hawks might have been playing with a 26-second shot clock, the Lakers with a 22-second clock, but it didn't matter in the end.
