--AGBU Manoogian-Demirdjian High School Team "A" Places Fourth North Hollywood High School North Hollywood High School, originally called Lankershim High School when it opened in 1927, is a secondary school in North Hollywood in Los Angeles, California. The school mascot is the husky, and the school colors are blue, white, grey. Team "A" won first place today for the eighth time in the annual LADWP Science Bowl Regional Competition. The team will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE), to represent the city of Los Angeles
The LADWP Science Bowl is an official, regional qualifying tournament of the USDOE National Science Bowl. Subjects cover computer science, biology, physics, earth science, chemistry, astronomy, mathematics and new advances in technology. Annually, about 100 volunteers, mainly LADWP employees and their families, serve as moderators, timekeepers, and scorekeepers. "The North Hollywood High School Team 'A' will be a wonderful representative of Los Angeles. The students demonstrated great skill and worked well together. We are proud of them and all participating teams," said George Rofail, chair of the LADWP Science Bowl Volunteer Steering Committee. Team "A." Third place was won by North Hollywood High School Team "B." Fourth place was award to the AGBU Manoogian-Demirdjian High School Team "A." The competition at the National Science Bowl is expected to be tough. A total of 65 regional finalists are expected from 40 states, the District of Columbia District of Columbia, federal district (2000 pop. 572,059, a 5.7% decrease in population since the 1990 census), 69 sq mi (179 sq km), on the east bank of the Potomac River, coextensive with the city of Washington, D.C. (the capital of the United States). and the U.S. Virgin Islands. This year, 12,000 students will participate in regional competitions. In addition to the regular buzzer competition, the special Franklin Lu Hands-On Competition was held. The competition is named for Franklin Lu, an electrical engineer and devoted Science Bowl Volunteer, who passed away suddenly in Nov. 2001. This year the competition involved building a self propelled boat. The winning teams were determined by the distance that the boats traveled in 60 seconds.
