After 13 lead changes and after the score had been tied five times in the final five minutes, Tuesday night's Southern Section Division IV-A quarterfinal playoff thriller between L.A. Baptist and Bell-Jeff came down to one last shot.

Bell-Jeff's Ruben Douglas Ruben Enrique Douglas (born October 30, 1979 in Pasadena, California, U.S.) is a Panamaian-American professional basketball player currently with Pamesa Valencia of the ACB, the premier professional basketball league in Spain.  launched a 3-point attempt from the baseline with one second left, but it missed, enabling L.A. Baptist to escape with a 73-70 win over the Guards at North Hollywood High

These two evenly matched local small-school powers put on an entertaining show all night. The game was tied at 36 at halftime. L.A. Baptist went on a 16-2 run to open a 52-38 lead, taking advantage of Douglas' absence (four fouls). But Bell-Jeff (21-7) showed surprising perseverance. The Guards rallied behind Kent Dennis, reeling off 10 straight points.

By the time Douglas returned with 6:29 left, Bell-Jeff was making a furious comeback. Douglas' two free throws with 2:55 left gave the Guards a 63-61 lead. Then the game was turned over to each team's two star players - Douglas and L.A. Baptist's Jermaine Sweet.

Sweet scored on a three-point play, then made a steal and basket for a 68-65 L.A. Baptist lead. Then Douglas answered with a 3-point shot from the top of the key, tying the game at 68 with 1:23 left. Then Sweet made two free throws for a 70-68 Knights advantage.

Sweet missed three straight free throws in the final 16 seconds before finally connecting with eight seconds left. Then Douglas failed on his last-second shot attempt. It was a relief for L.A. Baptist coach Bob Chevalier.

``I knew it was going to be this kind of game,'' Chevalier said. ``Even when we went up by 14, I told my coaches this isn't going to be enough. This is a great win.''

Sweet finished with 28 points and teammate Aaron Davis Aaron Davis (born April 8, 1967 in Bronx,NY, United States) was a professional boxer in the welterweight (147lb) division. Professional career

An unsung hero for L.A. Said Chevalier: ``That's just Josh playing hard. He was playing on one ankle. Douglas is a great player. Josh made him work for every point.''
