Founded in 1919 by William Andrews Clark, Jr.
 began its fifth season at Disney Hall Thursday on a starry note, with American diva Renee Fleming making her debut in Frank Gehry's architectural marvel and Hollywood dignitaries Jack Nicholson John Joseph Nicholson (born April 22 1937), known as Jack Nicholson, is a three time Academy Award winning American actor internationally renowned for his often dark-themed portrayals of neurotic characters.  and Diane Keaton in the audience. Fleming, in what one observer called "a mermaid dress" of pale green and gold, followed with Ravel's song cycle "Sheherazade," and later with Puccini's moving "O mio babbino caro O mio babbino caro ("Oh my dear daddy") is an aria from Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini. It is sung by Lauretta after tensions between Schicchi and his prospective in-laws have reached a breaking point. ." And there was dancing as well -- with can-can girls at the gala afterward in the giant tent on the blocked-off Grand Avenue. Even Gehry was seen cutting a rug as Nicholson mugged at his table. Money from the event went to the Musicians Pension Fund and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association.

Beloved by the gay community, Light co-starred this year in the event's opening-night film, "Save Me."
