Whatever the reasons, the girls who make up the first track team in La Reina High School La Reina High School is a Catholic college preparatory junior and senior high school for girls. Located in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, La Reina is owned and administered by the Sisters of Notre Dame.  history have discovered that competing might be the best reason of all.

``Once you get out there and perform, that edge just sort of takes over,'' said Susanna Susanna.

Myrley, who runs long distance and throws the shot put. ``You want to try and win.''

Like many of her teammates, Myrley tried out for the team to keep in shape for her other sport - cross country. She had never competed in track and field. When the school decided to offer the sport for the first time this year, Myrley gave it a try.

``I thought it would be fun,'' she said.

Nine of the girls on the team competed last year with the Oak Park High School team coached by Kim Kim

``Starting a program from ground zero really appealed to me,'' Kimber said.

Kimber was surprised 27 girls came out.

Myrley thought she'd have to recruit some friends. Like Kimber, she was pleasantly surprised at the positive response.

``It's a real accomplishment for La Reina,'' Myrley said. ``To get that many girls to come out, especially for a school so small, is great.''

The Regents' strength appears to be its diversity. Among the athletes cited by Kimber are Kim Utterson, who was the Southern Section Division V champion in the mile while competing at Oak Park, and Cheryl Kruer, who took fourth place in the 110 hurdles.

Kimber's goal to start the season was to have fun while building confidence and developing talent for the next few years.

``I wanted a team that has the most positive attitude out there,'' she said.

The Regents are starting to feel as if they can have an impact in league after beating Calabasas and Oak Park in a preseason meet recently.

``Now it's like `Hey, maybe we can win the league championship' '' Kimber said. ``The feeling is, we might as well give it a shot.''
