LA CANADA EXPECTS BATTLE.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

The La Canada High girls are in position to defend their Southern Section Division III

The defending state champions have started slowly, including a decisive loss to South Hills in the Stanford Invitational. The Spartans, however, have come on in recent weeks with a strong showing to win their fifth consecutive Rio Hondo League title, and in the section preliminaries to turn today's 8:45 a.m. race into a two-way battle with South Hills.

``The only way we could lose last year was if there was a three-car pileup on the 210 on the way to the race,'' said Dennis McNulty, the La Canada co-coach with Tony Haynes. ``Tony and I will never look that good as coaches again.''

La Canada has a solid top five with defending champion Nicole Bonino, Carina Carina (kərē`nə) [Lat.,=the keel], southern constellation, representing the keel of the ancient constellation Argo Navis, or Ship of the Argonauts. Carina contains Canopus, the second brightest star in the sky.  Garnic, Emily Farr, Christina Ellis and Becky Zentmyer. South Hills, though, could claim the title with mid-pack strength and an off-day by any of the La Canada runners.

The Division IV boys' race between Oak Park and two-time defending state champion Nordhoff at 10:45 figures to be another closely contested battle. Oak Park, which won its first Ventura County title behind Mark Nevers, Erik Wackenstedt and Chase Ferrell, has posted narrow victories over the Rangers twice this fall.

Anita Siraki of Hoover and Tom Kubler of Viewpoint are strong favorites for individual titles in girls' Division I and boys' Division V. Laura Jakosky of Agoura is the defending Division II girls' champion. Ryan Burnett and Jon Facer fac·er

The four-time champion Belmont boys are favored for their 15th title in 18 years in the City championships at Pierce College. Glendale also won the state title in 1995 and Moorpark won championships in 1996 and 1997.

The Vaqueros, led by sophomores Eduardo Diaz and Jorge Lopez, members of Glendale's 1998 state champion team, figure to be in a four-way battle with San Diego Mesa, Santa Ana and Orange Coast for the team title.

Mesa defeated Glendale by eight points to win the Southern California title with only 16 points separating the first four teams on the relatively flat regional championship course at Kern County Soccer Park.

History, however, will be on the Vaqueros' side today. Glendale defeated Mesa to win the Cuesta Invitational and the 1998 WSC WSC Winter Symposium on Chemometrics
