L.A. initiates pilot recycling program.

Los Angeles is taking steps to bring recycling to 100,000 city apartments with a two-year pilot program.

The program, which is expected to begin in March or April, will apply to certain large apartment complexes and is anticipated to divert 100,000 tons of material for recycling, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times. However, the program could later be expanded to include all 650,000 apartments in the city.

The city will pay five contractors $6.2 million during the next two years to identify appropriate apartment, buildings in every council district and to provide education, recycling bins and bags and collection services, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The city currently provides recycling to 720,000 single-family homes and to multi-family units with four units or fewer, according to the report.
