L.A. county daily newspapers: ranked by daily circulation as of September 2007.EXECUTIVE SUMMARY CIRCULATION figures continue to decline at many L.A. County daily newspapers, with more people getting their news from the Internet, television and other media. Weekday circulation fell 3 percent to 1.5 million, for the circulation period ended Sept. 30, compared with the same period last year. Los Angeles Times, which is owned by Chicago-based Tribune Co. and accounted for nearly half of all readers, saw daily circulation hold steady. Sunday circulation fell 5 percent. No. 2 Investor's Business Daily saw circulation decline 7 percent. Last year, it was one of the few periodicals that reported higher daily circulation figures. The national business newspaper reported daily circulation of 161,226. It does not put out a Sunday edition. MediaNews Group Inc. owns five papers and operates one other paper on the list, which combined to account for daily circulation of approximately 5130,000. Its largest publication locally is No. 3 Daily News. Last December, Hearst Corp. purchased the Torrance-based Daily Breeze from Copley Press Inc. MediaNews Group operates the paper on behalf of Hearst. [GRAPHICS OMITTED] THE PACESETTER LOS ANGELES TIMES THE Tribune Co. property remains the largest daily newspaper in Los Angeles with daily circulation of 779,682 for September 2007, up 3,916 readers over the previous year. Sunday circulation fell to 1.11 million, down 5 percent from a year ago. Chicago-based Tribune Co. purchased the property in 2000, but its ownership is in flux as the parent company reached an agreement with real estate developer Sam Zell to be acquired for $8.2 billion. If the deal closes, Zell may sell parts of Tribune Co., including the Chicago Cubs. Zell has said that he does not plan to sell the Times. He beat out potential L.A. investors Eli Broad and Ron Burkle, who were making competing bids. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Tribune Co. has been pushed by its major shareholders and the Chandler family--former owner of the Times--to sell individual elements or the entire company. The paper has continued to see revenues decline although current management has stayed in place for a year and may provide some stability. David Hiller serves as the paper's publisher, replacing Jeffrey Johnson. Editor James O'Shea, a former editor of the Chicago Tribune, holds the post vacated by Dean Baquet. Johnson and Baquet were replaced after they refused to make cuts demanded by Tribune.
