L.A. WINELINE RARE CHANCE FOR ELITISTS.

Byline: - Larry Lipson

Local wine collectors, and there are many, like to show off to their friends, usually collectors as well.

``I picked up this rare wine,'' the conversation is likely to go, ``and only a couple of hundred cases were brought into the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. ,'' they'll say, sometimes barely whispering, as if a louder tone might reveal a national top secret.

Red Carpet, the savvy Glendale wine and spirits merchant, feeds into this by making such wines (for domestics, 300 cases or fewer produced; a maximum of 300 cases imported) available to their customers on a regular basis.

Among those currently in stock, are the 2001 Ancien (``a tiny garage- style winery'') Russian River pinot noir for $31.03; a real champagne from a tiny producer (only 167 cases) named Christian Busin and his nonvintage Cuvee Cuvée (or Cuvee on some English language labels) is a French term used on wine labels to denote wine of a specific blend or batch. The word originates from the French word cuve meaning "vat".  D'Uzes for $33.26; a 2000 Chateau Belles-Cimes St. Emilion (only 200 cases in United States) for $15.96; and the 2002 Rozak Ranch chardonnay (only 75 cases made) from California's Santa Rita Santa Rita may refer to:
