L.A. WINELINE OSCAR NIGHT BY THE BOTTLE.

Byline: - Larry Lipson

The white is described as ``seductive, rich, creamy and full-bodied with aromas of apples, honey, warm buttered toast and caramel and flavors of apples, pears, nutmeg and toffee.''

The red is said to be ``complex and rich with aromas of cassis cas·sis

Rob Hunter of Sterling Vineyards uses these descriptions of Sterling's 2000 reserve chardonnay and its reserve cabernet sauvignon of the same vintage.

These are the two featured wines to be poured for the 1,650 guests, many of them among the world's most recognizable faces, dining at the Governors Ball on Sunday in Hollywood following the 76th annual Academy Awards.

Paired with the cooking and presentation of chef Wolfgang Puck and his staff, the dinner shouldn't be anything less than a sterling happening.

SPEAKING OF CHARDONNAY: Don't get too confused, but there's a LaTour wine from California now, joining the Latours and La Tours of France.

Not related to any French producer or shipper, LaTour 2002 chardonnay is a Napa product from the winery's own Mount Veeder vineyards. It's the inaugural release of owner-winemaker Tom LaTour who also happens to be the chairman and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. The $29 wine can be purchased from the Kimpton Life Wine Society at www.kimptonlifewinesociety.com or sipped in any of the Kimpton restaurants around the country.

But the Butterfield Station 2001 California shiraz is exactly that.

As my Bargain of the Month pick, this ``fruit forward'' red wine made from the shiraz (or syrah) grape is full of lovely flavors - dried plums, apricots, cherries - and as the label tells us, it also offers spicy hints of clove and pepper.

It's available at Liquid Wine & Spirits, 10100 Topanga Canyon Blvd., Chatsworth, for only $5.99. Information: (818) 709-5019.
