L.A. TEENS TO COMPETE FOR SCIENCE BOWL TITLE.

Students from 32 schools will converge on the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is the largest municipal utility in the United States, serving 3.9 million residents in 2006. It was founded in 1902 to deliver water and electricity supplies to residents and businesses in Los Angeles.  building today to compete in a regional science contest.

Two-time National Science Bowl champion Venice High School Venice High School may refer to:
  • Venice High School (Los Angeles)
  • Venice High School (Florida)
 will defend its U.S. and regional titles against teams from public and private schools.

The Science Bowl is based on television's vintage ``General Electric College Bowl'' game show. Two teams of five students answer preliminary toss-up questions from a moderator moderator - A person, or small group of people, who manages a moderated mailing list or Usenet newsgroup. Moderators are responsible for determining which email submissions are passed on to the list or newsgroup.  until one team wins the right to answer bonus questions.

Subjects include computer science, biology, chemistry, robotics robotics, science and technology of general purpose, programmable machine systems. Contrary to the popular fiction image of robots as ambulatory machines of human appearance capable of performing almost any task, most robotic systems are anchored to fixed positions  and space travel.

``The program is an excellent way to showcase the academic achievements of high school scholars throughout the city,'' said George Rofail, Science Bowl chairman. ``The purpose . . . is to encourage students . . . to pursue studies and careers in science, math and technology.''

The first-place team will win $1,000 in science equipment, materials or software of their choice for their school. Each student on the team will get a Hitachi Scholarship valued at $1,000, and the whole team will attend the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C.

The second-place team will receive $800 for equipment; the third-place team, $600; and the fourth-place team, $400.

Van Nuys High School Van Nuys High School (VNHS) established in 1914, is a high school in the Van Nuys area of Los Angeles, California, belonging to the Los Angeles Unified School District: District 2.  won in 1995; Venice High in 1996 and 1997.

The Science Bowl will begin at 8 a.m. today at 111 N. Hope St., Los Angeles and end at 6 p.m.
