L.A. STILL SUFFERING INFERIORITY COMPLEX.

Byline: Karen Crouse

When L.A. looks into the mirror, it doesn't see its fair weather, its mesmerizing mes·mer·ize
tr.v. mes·mer·ized, mes·mer·iz·ing, mes·mer·iz·es
1. To spellbind; enthrall: "He could mesmerize an audience by the sheer force of his presence"
shoreline, its mountainous curves, its exotic features, its nose for innovation.

Like a bodybuilder who stares in the mirror and sees a 98-pound weakling, L.A. suffers from a distorted selmage. It can't see its many positive qualities because it is fixated fix·ate

1. To make fixed, stable, or stationary.

2. To focus one's eyes or attention on: fixate a faint object.
 on its muscles.

They appear to have atrophied the past few years. In the 1980s L.A.'s muscles commanded everybody's attention, but now L.A. flexes them on the stage that is the professional sports The examples and perspective in this article or section may not represent a worldwide view of the subject.

scene and nobody so much as blinks.

Some people have even taken to laughing L.A. off the stage. Don't think that hasn't worked on the city's psyche some.

Never mind that L.A. still has plenty to preen about. It simply can't get over all that definition that has just disappeared despite its best efforts to regenerate it. Where oh where did the Pedro Martinezes, the Henry Rodriguezes, the Danny Mannings, the Vlade Divaces, the Al Davises and the Georgia Frontieres go?

It hurts L.A. deeply to see lesser rivals such as St. Louis muscle their way past it on sport's biggest stages. Don't think L.A. didn't notice the Rams' Super Bowl win this year or Jim Edmonds' super start for the Cardinals.

It was just more salt applied to the open wound that is the city's selmage.

If L.A. visited Dr. Melfi's couch, you can be sure it wouldn't take Lorraine Bracco's ``Sopranos'' character long to get the city to own up to feelings of inadequacy.

You don't have to play a psychiatrist on television to recognize the root of the problem: The Dodgers, Clippers, Kings, Lakers, Angels, Galaxy and Mighty Ducks

Mighty Ducks is a half-hour Disney animated series aired on ABC and The Disney Afternoon in the fall of 1996. Twenty-six episodes total were produced.

 to spit in since 1989.

After winning eight pro team championships in the 1980s (five by the Lakers, two by the Dodgers and one by the Raiders), L.A. went 0-for-the- 1990s.

Marty McSorley's illegal stick threw the Kings a curve in 1993 and it's almost as though all of L.A.'s muscles went into oxygen debt after that. It really has been painful to watch L.A. stagger to the finish line of the 20th century, what with the Clippers stringing together 13 losing seasons and the Dodgers, Lakers and Kings each having gotten swept off the road in their past two trips to Playoffland.

Lose Angeles, indeed. The city has been so busy picking broom bristles out of its teeth it really hasn't joined the chorus of people singing the praises of this year's Lakers squad.

Sure, the Lakers under first-year coach Phil Jackson

or the First Interstate World Center, but this thought keeps weighing it down: If the Boston Celtics could lose in 1973, why not the Lakers now?

Obviously, L.A.'s psyche these days is more fragile than Kobe Bryant's sprained right wrist or Shaquille O'Neal's gimpy gimp 1

L.A. doesn't want to have that beaten feeling. It wants to scream ``Sacramento (Stinks)'' and have it not come off sounding mickey mouse.

The city desperately wants to believe Divac, the former Lakers forward turned Sacramento stalwart, won't expose the Lakers's low(ly)-post defense. The city wants to believe the Kings' fast-break will crash and burn when it hits the Lakers' wall of defense.

L.A. is trying to think positive. Which is why, everywhere Bryant goes, he hears a familiar refrain. The city is telling him to ``bring home a championship,'' and that ``the time is now'' for the Lakers.

Bryant is only 21 years old, which is too young to understand that what L.A. really is saying is it's high time L.A. got its groove back.

Jackson, more of a stranger to L.A. than Bryant but infinitely more familiar with the symbiosis symbiosis (sĭmbēō`sĭs), the habitual living together of organisms of different species.
