Philharmonic's opening night at the Hollywood Bowl on Tuesday. Playing the part of Giovanni, a ladies man who in the opera tries to seduce the bride-to-be of another man, Ramey wrapped his arms around von Stade and together they ran off stage, hand in hand. The audience's applause of the surprising move seemed endless. Performances by the L.A. Philharmonic tend to let loose this way, and Tuesday was no exception. There were moments when the performers waxed playful and moments when they were just plain silly. In the song ``I Bought Me a Cat'' from Copland's ``Old American Songs,'' von Stade did her best Donald Duck ``quack.'' Of course, it wasn't all fun and games "Fun and Games" is an episode of the original The Outer Limits television show. It first aired on 30 March, 1964, during the first season. Opening narration . Ramey's version of ``Old Man River'' was breathtaking. The concert opened with the L.A. Philharmonic, under the direction of Leonard Slatkin, performing Berlioz's ``Roman Carnival Overture.'' Also featured in the program were works by Offenbach (``Ah! que j'aime les militaires'' and ``Dites-lui qu'on l'a remarque'' from ``The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein''), Boito Verdi (``Ecco il mondo'' from ``Mesfistofele'' and ``Uldino! Uldino! ... Mentre gonfiarsi l'anima'' from ``Attila''), Copland (``An Outdoor Overture'' and selections from ``Old American Songs'') Kern and Hammerstein (selections from ``Show Boat'') and Rodgers and Hammerstein (``Some Enchanted en·chant tr.v. en·chant·ed, en·chant·ing, en·chants 1. To cast a spell over; bewitch. 2. To attract and delight; entrance. See Synonyms at charm. Evening'' from ``South Pacific'' and ``People Will Say We're in Love'' from ``Oklahoma!''). Slatkin got a few laughs, too, when during Gershwin's ``Promenade (Walking the Dog)'' from the movie ``Shall We Dance,'' he took five from his directing duties. Leaning against his conductor's banister, he crossed his arms and watched as the musicians did their thing. The L.A. Philharmonic returns tonight for a concert that features 17- year-old cellist Han-Na Chang. |
