L.A. GETS ITS IRISH UP AGAIN ST. PATRICK'S DAY PARADE RESTORED.

Byline: Robert Monroe Staff Writer

Erin go downtown!

For the first time since 1992, Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  will host a St. Patrick's St. Patrick's or Saint Patrick's may refer to:

  • St. Patrick's Purgatory, an ancient pilgrimage in Lough Derg, County Donegal, Ireland
Day parade today featuring Irish dancers, a dozen marching bands and public transit officials beating snakes out of the city. The Los Angeles fire officials organizing the parade said it's a chance for Los Angeles to catch up to the rest of the world.

``Los Angeles is one of the last major cities in the free world not to have a St. Patrick's Day parade, and we decided to change that,'' fire Capt. Rich Hanson said.

The last parade was in Century City, drawing some 20,000 people.

Today's parade, which will start at 11:30 a.m. at City Hall, is the centerpiece of events taking place citywide that will include an Irish food cook-off at James Monroe High School James Monroe High School may refer to:

Monroe Culinary Arts teacher Eleanor Schuster said her students will serve Irish dishes such as boiled beef This article is about the English dish. For the German dish, see Tafelspitz.

and cabbage, scones and roast chicken to about 80 dignitaries and school staff members.

Ironically, all but two of the 170 students preparing the meal are Latino, she said.

Rose of Tralee's president, Terry Anderson Terry Anderson may be:

, said this year will be a special treat for his organization because the City Hall crowning of the Rose of Tralee among 15 area debutantes will actually take place on St. Patrick's Day. In recent years, the 125-year-old event has taken place on the Friday nearest the holiday.

Anderson added that the new millennium might mark a changing era for Los Angeles.

``It's going to be a new kind of downtown,'' Anderson said. ``Maybe it's time for a new kind of parade. I think it can really snap, crackle and pop Snap, Crackle and Pop! are the cartoon mascots of Kellogg's breakfast cereal Rice Krispies (Rice Bubbles in Australia). History

.''

Likewise, Allene Buchanan, membership chairwoman of the Glendale-based Southern California Irish Network, predicted the event will grow over time. Members of the police Emerald Society, an affiliate of the network, will play bagpipes bagpipes

 in the parade.

``I think it will happen because everyone likes to celebrate St. Patrick's Day whether they're Irish or not,'' said Buchanan, whose 250-member group educates the public on Irish heritage. ``It's a long time in coming.''

Los Angeles has hosted St. Patrick's Day parades as recently as the 1980s but those sputtered out after a few years, said organizer and Los Angeles fire Capt. Richard Andrade. Before that, he could find none in this century. He said this parade already has garnered more than 90 sponsors almost entirely by word of mouth.

``In the last two weeks it has just skyrocketed,'' he said.

This parade will feature Mayor Richard Riordan, Police Chief Bernard C. Parks Bernard Parks (born December 7, 1943 in Beaumont, Texas) is a member of the Los Angeles City Council, representing the 8th District in South Los Angeles and former Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Parks attended Los Angeles City College, received his B.S.
and Fire Chief William Bamattre as grand marshals.

``The difference in this parade is this is more like the old East Coast parades where the police and fire departments play a heavy role,'' Andrade said.

St. Patrick's Day parades are a staple of East Coast and Midwest cities. Arguably the most famous is in Chicago, where the city dyes the Chicago River green.

Andrade said no such plans are afoot for the trickling Los Angeles River The Los Angeles River is an intermittent river flowing through Los Angeles County, California, from Canoga Park in the west end of the San Fernando Valley, 51 miles (82 km) southeast to its mouth in Long Beach. .

``It's pretty much already green,'' he said.
