L.A. EVENTS FETE MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE.

Thousands of people in the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  area will celebrate Mexican Independence Day this weekend with fiestas, dance and mariachi concerts, lectures and other special events.

Mayor Richard Riordan Richard J. Riordan (born May 1, 1930) is a Republican politician from California, U.S. who served as the California Secretary of Education from 2003–2005 and as Mayor of Los Angeles from 1993–2001. Riordan ran for Governor of California unsuccessfully in 2002.  opened the three-day fiesta Friday on Olvera Street Olvera Street is in the oldest part of Downtown Los Angeles, California, and is otherwise known as the birthplace of the City of Angels or El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument and is a department within the city. , where more than 100,000 people are expected over the weekend.

The Olvera Street fiesta will continue from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Sunday.

In the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.
, Santa Rosa Church Santa Rosa Church is a tabernacle in the Italian city of Florence in the province of Tuscany. , 668 S. Workman St., is holding a carnival featuring musical entertainment, a talent show, traditional Mexican foods, game booths, bingo and pony rides.

The carnival will continue today from 1 p.m. to midnight and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Although Mexican Independence Day actually is Tuesday, most of the celebrations are being held over the weekend. The weekend celebrations also serve as a prelude to Latino Heritage Month, which will be observed with a variety of events from mid-September to Oct. 15.

The Mexican Declaration of Independence was issued Sept. 16, 1810, although Mexico did not officially separate from Spain until 1821.

A celebration scheduled for noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at Whittier Narrows The Whittier Narrows is located at the southern boundary of the San Gabriel Valley, in Los Angeles County, California. It is a gap in the Puente Hills where the Rio Hondo and the San Gabriel River converge.  Regional Park is expected to be one of the largest in the region.

Another of the weekend events will be a concert Sunday in the San Fernando Valley showcasing eight mariachi groups.

The concert, organized by Councilman Richard Alarcon and the San Fernando Valley Latino Arts Council, will run from 3 to 6:30 p.m. in the amphitheater of the Hansen Dam sports complex in Lake View Terrace.

One of the bands will be the Valley-based Las Atentivas, an all-girl group.

Assemblyman Tony Cardenas, D-Panorama City, will lecture Monday at Mission College about Mexican Independence Day.

There will be mariachi music, arts and crafts arts and crafts, term for that general field of applied design in which hand fabrication is dominant. The term was coined in England in the late 19th cent. as a label for the then-current movement directed toward the revivifying of the decorative arts.  booths and Mexican food starting at 5 p.m. on the campus quad before the program featuring Cardenas starts at the campus center.

A ceremony celebrating ``El Grito,'' the historic speech by Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla calling for justice and independence from Spain, will be held Monday on the steps of San Fernando City Hall, 117 Macneil St., San Fernando.

The celebration by City Hall, from 5 to 10 p.m., will include ballet folklorico performances and music by the Johnny Alonso band and mariachi groups.
