L.A. DRIVES TO STEAL DETROIT'S THUNDER.

Byline: BRENT HOPKINS Staff Writer

No longer in Detroit's big shadow, The Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Auto Show An auto show, or motor show, is a public exhibition of current automobile models, debuts, concept cars, or out-of-production classics. With the two shows overlapping, Los Angeles often lost out to the manufacturing capital of the American automotive industry The automotive industry is the industry involved in the design, development, manufacture, marketing, and sale of motor vehicles. In 2006, more than 69 million motor vehicles, including cars and commercial vehicles were produced worldwide. , with the Detroit show garnering more high-profile debuts and concept cars.

But with the Los Angeles show rescheduled this year for the first 10 days of December, then moved to November in following years, the local exhibition has gained added prominence.

Barry Toepke, the show's director of communications Director of Communications is a position in the private and public sectors. As a result, he said, attendees can expect a more impressive show than in years past.

``L.A.'s been undertrained by the manufacturers. Detroit is the 800- pound gorilla, so it's a must-attend show, but ... Los Angeles is an easier environment,'' Toepke said. ``That's going to make for a better show for the consumer.''

Once Los Angeles has the spotlight to itself, carmakers will be able to line up media interviews with the trade press, driving tests and other events that sometimes got lost in the January shuffle. As a result, they have more incentive to show off new models. Given the region's emergence as a design center, car fans can expect the first glimpses of vehicles coming out of Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  studios.

That translates into an economic impact that resonates far beyond the hype as well.

``The sense of anticipation is much greater than past years,'' said Charlie Gill, executive director of the Greater Los Angeles New Car Dealers Association. ``They can focus all their energy on our show, which will bring more attention, more attendance and, from our point of view, more sales.''
