L.A. Chapter Meets with IRS District Directors.The Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. Chapter held its Annual Liaison Meeting February 11 with representatives from the Los Angeles and Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, Districts of the Internal Revenue Service. Chapter President Randy LeVan of Conexant Systems gave an overview of the mission of TEI 1. (communications) TEI - Terminal Endpoint Identifier. 2. (text, project) TEI - Text Encoding Initiative. and its purpose at both the national and local levels, as well as a summary of the various industries represented in the Los Angeles Chapter (based on a survey prepared by Chapter Programs Vice President Greg Breen). IRS An abbreviation for the Internal Revenue Service, a federal agency charged with the responsibility of administering and enforcing internal revenue laws. District Director Steven Jensen (Los Angeles) provided an update on the IRS restructuring. Acting District Director Joe Brimacombe (Southern California) discussed managing the IRS into the next decade and gave an update on IRS performance measures. Wendy Pfeiffer, Internet Business Director at Candle Corporation, made a presentation on technology's effect on business and the E-Business Initiative. Steve PonTell, President of La Jolla La Jolla (lə hoi`yə), on the Pacific Ocean, S Calif., an uninc. district within the confines of San Diego; founded 1869. The beautiful ocean beaches, in particular La Jolla shores and Black's Beach, and sea-washed caves attract visitors and Institute, spoke on the future of the L.A. economy and businesses. Following a reception and lunch, Bill LaVere (Countrywide Home Loans) discussed technology in managing the tax department. Bill designed and maintains the website for the Los Angeles Chapter at http:// home.earthlink.net/~blavere/tei/. A question and answer period followed. September Seminar The chapter continued its successful seminar program with a fullday presentation on Financing the Multinational Corporation multinational corporation, business enterprise with manufacturing, sales, or service subsidiaries in one or more foreign countries, also known as a transnational or international corporation. These corporations originated early in the 20th cent. -- Tax Issues. Among the presenters were Dean Weiner of O'Melveny & Myers and Maurice S. Emmer and Rachel Hersey of Baker & McKenzie. The fourth annual gathering brought 15 past presidents, their spouses, and two wives of deceased presidents to the home of 1993-1994 Chapter President Tom Clark and his wife, Helen.
