L.A. COLLEGES LURE FOR LOCALS.

Area residents who want to watch local stars in nearby colleges have plenty of athletes from which to choose. Thirty-eight athletes who have graduated from local high schools now play fall sports for USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. , UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

But other than football teams, nowhere is the concentration of local talent higher than within the Pepperdine women's soccer program. Five players - Stacia and Tasha Spangler from Westlake, Julie Stuart and April Blaker from Agoura (Blaker transferred from San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. Since the players know each other, they help in recruiting. Ward trusts his players' judgments, so if they suggest he look at someone, he will - often for years, since he's so close.

``It's becoming quite a family around here,'' Ward said.
